It seems that Bundy was and is willing to pay the rents to an authority that he recognizes that he has a contract with... the county. The rents suddenly became payable to the feds and if he pays that he sets the precedent of having recognized that authority. A bad move on his part.
This goes back to the Sagebrush Rebellion of 1991 when the cattlemen actually won but a three judge appeals court overturned that favorable ruling when Reagan and Bush 1 left office. There is no uniform law, only the current regime.
I’m no legal scholar, but I know a little bit about how the world works and how businessmen operate (and lawyers are businessmen, too).
I’d bet money that all the top conservative lawyers in the US will be piling on to handle this pro bono (for the publicity alone) and that they’ll get Bundy into a three-piece suit and up to speed on effective courtroom dress, deportment, and behavior before you can say, “Jack Robinson.”
Personally, I like his chances.
Yes that is my understanding also, that Bundy has been paying the county and is willing to pay the county what he owes in back fees. Seems that the BLM moved in using a Jessie Jackson type shakedown maneuver and demanded the fees be paid to them and Bundy is unwilling to go along with that shakedown.
Also, Reid should face recrimination and questions from fellow senators on the floor of the senate. Bait the old buzzard into a spittle spewing defense of himself.

Land is protected because of a tortoise. However Bundy owes 1.3 million in back payments so his herd can graze on protected land.
Sounds like a lawsuit. A big lawsuit.
