TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Staff Sgt. Shannon Hutto thought his bomb sniffing dog Eddie was just being lazy when he wouldnt move from a certain spot one hot day in Afghanistan in 2012.
But Hutto then saw what Eddie smelled: a homemade bomb, partially buried in the dirt. It was six inches from Huttos foot.

An inspiring story with a happy ending. Enjoy your retirement, Eddie!
“A special cake made out of peanut butter and bananas?” Jeepers, how about a gold watch and some booze? Maybe a perfumed cutie? ;)
Good. If humans are going to risk the lives of such intelligent and loyal cretures as dogs in our own affairs, they should be rewarded.
I keep a Malinois ( or it keeps me ) . By far the best canine breed I have ever lived with and I have had many . Malinios are brave , loyal , smart ( freaky smart ) and live to please their master , their handler . They are high energy animals , especially in their first 5 years . Yet they mellow with age . Best darned friend I ever had ( including humans) Great family dogs . Highly socializable . No worries about children , they are their best protector ever . God Bless Malinois
Great story about a real hero
thank you for posting
Peanut butter and bananas? A dog after my own heart! Happy retirement, Eddie.
They are wonderful dogs.
I’m so glad that he’s going to be reunited in a forever home with his first handler.
Tears in my eyes. Wonderful dog. Have a good retirement, Eddie. You deserve it.
You love dogs. I like you. I don’t care for people who don’t like dogs.
My mother-in-law doesn’t like them. I have four dogs. She doesn’t come over very often.
Good.
Bravo. I feel the same way. Love me, love my dogs. (I have 4 now, it was 5 until January, when I lost my beloved Irish Setter name of The Rustle, aka Rusty).
What a good boy. I’m so glad he’s going to be retired with someone who loves him. But I’ll bet a peanut butter and banana cake is going to give him a messy bottom.
I have two dogs, a tough medium sized one and a little rat-like kinda thing who is very sweet but not much in the dog department, if you know what I mean. I usually prefer big energetic dogs, though, and I dream I having a Malinois someday. Bless your pup.
she’s an ‘old girl’ now :^)
perfect companion
Happy for the dog, he received three honors:
Retirement
Reunited with his handler
But the greastest honor was not having to endure a phony photo-op with mac daddy.
I have a Mali as well. They are not for casual dog owners, but good ones are high energy, clingy with family and kids, fearless protectors (and known as maligators for their bite) Very smart and trainable, but over the top in most categories, but they are not for everyone, I think you must be a pretty capable trainer and disciplinarian or they will quickly overwhelm you, in other words if you have control of them, they are wonderful companions, who will go to any extreme for you.
“Eddie saved Huttos life, the lives of a dozen patrol members and countless people in the village.”
And some say God ain’t gonna let dogs into Heaven.
I’ll take that bet.
