I Looked Up The Fastest-Growing Jobs In America, And Boy Was It Depressing
Business Insider ^ | 04/07/2014 | Rob Wile

If you live in certain buildings in New York City, you get to know your doorman.

The weekend guy in my building, Gene, knew I was a business reporter, and on Saturday he asked me what his son should study when he starts City College next year.

(City College, by the way, remains the primary option — and a stellar one — for advanced higher ed in New York for the children of what remains of New York's working class.)

Anyway, off the top of my head, I was at a loss. I mostly cover energy, an area that obviously has seen tremendous growth in the past few years, but I doubted his son would be interested in moving to North Dakota or Texas to work on an oil rig.

So I told him I'd look up what the fastest-growing job opportunities were in the country.

Each year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects which occupations it expects will see the greatest growth in the next few years.

The results you get depend on whether you're looking at absolute or percentage growth. But, as I discovered, both tell depressing stories.

First, on a rate basis, there's basically only one sector in the economy in which labor demand is growing at a steady clip: health and medical (21 out of 30 of the occupations listed in the table below are in this field).

these are jobs in and around fedgov healthcare.

how’s that ‘change’ working out for you?

if you’ve had enough, make sure to let every libtard you run into know how ‘thankful’ you are for their ‘enlightened’ votes that have screwed your life.

keying any car with an 0bama or other libtard sticker would help leave such a message

I wonder how lucrative the medical industry will be in a few years. After Obamacare kicks in in full force.

As the feds force us towards a single payer system, they will be trying to drive costs down at the expense of quality and availability.

Thank you for your wonderful explanation of a colon massage.

Please send it to algore so that his masseuse can get her act together correctly!

Thank you. In my opinion, one way toward social stability during economic difficulty is to encourage and teach those who are willing to become more self-sufficient. Necessity sometimes breeds motivation. The more self-sufficient people would be less of a burden. A few of them might even start doing productive work for all with new businesses. Competition is healthy for business and the economy.

Granted, the efforts may not make a huge difference, but a little extra positive difference is better than none. And it’s better than so much talk of violence interspersed with so much contemporary entertainment saying that “the end is near” (one example being the popularity of television shows about survivalism and disasters). There are plenty of do-it-yourself collaborations that reject talk of riots (rocket stove mass heaters, solar heating, various gardening sites, sharing of low-cost construction methods, repair tips,...). With such efforts, some neighbors even learn to get along, and we need to learn to save money again (also good for the economy).

We take too much for granted. Especially the younger generations who have had everything laid at their feet.

I remember when Bill Clinton bragged about America becoming a service economy and away from technology and manufacturing. That was a few years ago.

Unfortunately, we are slowly losing our grip.

Agreed. Well said.

I hope that we can see some expensive lab testing done on contraptions like the following before long (as well as testing on many other systems designs). Probably need better models of organizing and presentation to get it done. [Not my design or effort, BTW, but I am working on a design for a modified drainback solar radiant heating system with more thermal mass, no pressure, lower temperatures,...]

Everything that a Mexican can do without speaking English is either the same income level as it was 20 years ago or less.

I give the best advice in the world whenever a kid asks me what he/she should study. It's what I told both of my kids who have promising careers ahead of them - one in PWC, the other in IT.

My advice is sound.
Thus...

The day you finish school is a proud day. On that day you are a graduate.
The next day, you are something else: UNEMPLOYED.

Prepare for THAT day.

What should you be doing that day?
Looking for a job, so go to Monster.com, Indeed.com, Jobserve.com and research the job ads.
Find a job that you think you will like, but most important, pick something where there are a lot of jobs and they all pay well.

Also, make sure that the field will still be there in 4-5 years when you graduate.

Remember kids:

The day after you graduate, you are unemployed - prepare for that day.

I saw a sign on a building in Waco several years ago that read: Colon Massage Therapy. I thought, what a depressing job.

Don't laugh.
There was a guy that did that in some of Chicago's bathhouses just a few years ago and now he's President.

The only nursing jobs that are recruited hard are the factory jobs and Practitioners who are low-level engineers.

Last year US trade to China: 122 billion dollars.

Last year Chinese trade to America: 440 billion.

America has been sold out, by our very own businesses.

Buy American.
