If you live in certain buildings in New York City, you get to know your doorman.
The weekend guy in my building, Gene, knew I was a business reporter, and on Saturday he asked me what his son should study when he starts City College next year.
(City College, by the way, remains the primary option — and a stellar one — for advanced higher ed in New York for the children of what remains of New York's working class.)
Anyway, off the top of my head, I was at a loss. I mostly cover energy, an area that obviously has seen tremendous growth in the past few years, but I doubted his son would be interested in moving to North Dakota or Texas to work on an oil rig.
So I told him I'd look up what the fastest-growing job opportunities were in the country.
Each year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects which occupations it expects will see the greatest growth in the next few years.
The results you get depend on whether you're looking at absolute or percentage growth. But, as I discovered, both tell depressing stories.
First, on a rate basis, there's basically only one sector in the economy in which labor demand is growing at a steady clip: health and medical (21 out of 30 of the occupations listed in the table below are in this field).

Raise the import tariffs and put Americans back to work.
Demographics are going to continue to drive more people towards healthcare jobs. But we are not going to be able to afford healthcare jobs without some industry to produce wealth. We are dissaving to afford healthcare.
Healthcare doesn’t produce anything and is a drain on wealth. Healthcare can protect our most important wealth producing assets, people. But those people need jobs to produce wealth.

The answer appears to be "work as a servant doing unpleasant stuff for somebody else". Higher education is dandy if you have the smarts to do something with it and have an area of study that is actually needed today. We are evolving to a society where the less-blessed are either relegated to emptying bedpans or just receiving a government check to keep them from rioting. And the unspoken truth is that illegal immigrants can do all those menial jobs for much less already.
Since a larger percentage of our young people born today have also greater chances of being on the autism spectrum for no explicable reason, what exactly does our future appear to be? Is anybody doing anything about this?

A degree in geology from a good school in oil producing state has an average starting salary of 90k. I looked into it because I was thinking of going back to Tulane.

I've a friend who has a younger brother who went to college and became some sort of medical technician. He operates some kind of complicated machine.
He is always getting some further certification in running these machines and any new ones that come in to the market. The last Hospital/clinic that successfully recruited him not only give him a really good salary they give him a friking house. Deal is he has to stay working with them for x number of years and then he gets to keep the house forever even if he moves on to another job and it was only like 8 years or so. And it was a nice place in a good neighborhood even had a pool and hot tub with it.
This is exactly why I left being a computer programmer in favor of being a Business Analyst. The latter is communication intensive.

Wealth comes from the earth. Mining minerals, metals, energy, Agriculture, logging, fishing. Manufacturing and Transportation of goods. Do that and the wealth of the country allows people to make money off service industries. Democrats are doing everything to stop wealth creation for America.
