Both of Haraldson's children are in their 20s. South Dakota's child support laws only require child support payments up to age 18 in most cases, and 19 in one other instance.
But Haraldson, born and raised in South Dakota, was living in Canada at the time of his divorce. There, child support laws can go on indefinitely, unless he hires a lawyer and fights.
"I was told it was going to be $20,000 to $30,000 to litigate, and I'd have a 50-50 chance," Haraldson said by phone from Pierre. "I just went, 'Oh, my God.'"
Haraldson, a 52-year-old computer support specialist who lives in Pierre, has an administrative hearing with the state scheduled for Monday to protest the payments. But given the nature of state and federal laws, he may not have much luck.

I perceive that paying such pernicious penalties will presently put this poor person in severe penury and protracted poverty until he lies prostrate.

Correct... then when he loses his job because his pay was garnished, WE will get to support HIM and his KIDS through, subsidized housing, food stamps, welfare and unemployment.
When ‘they’ get tired of him drawing unemployment, he will get put on SS for some sort of ballooned disability.
Is this a great ‘new’ country or not...
It is no wonder that people sneak in on a daily basis.

It makes sense to help pay for your adult’s children education and when they graduate, normally the child support ends. In certain cases, if the adult child goes on to graduate or medical school, parental support can be extended.
He has to wait until his children graduate and then arrange with his ex to end the child support or to petition the court to terminate it.
Which begs the questions:
Why does the government have anything to do with marriage? It's a religious institution, "separation of church and state" and all that rot.
Why isn't the government requiring a license for procreation? It would be easy, you'd just have to provide proof of financial ability and the DNA of both parents, with a contract promising to provide total support for the child for the next 18 years.
That's all.

You can carry our children on your health insurance for a number of years. But its not perpetual.

Its actually an educational support obligation - while the adult child is in school in Canada, the child support remains in force. After that it generally ends.
If not, once his children graduate, he would have to petition the court in Canada to terminate the child support order.

"It makes sense if you choose to help pay for your kids' college educations. ONLY then. Otherwise, it's ludicrous for government to dictate to parents that they have a fiscal obligation to send their kids to college.
