Obama tries to put Putin in his place -- again
CBS News ^ | March 26, 2014 | By Major Garrett

Moments after deflecting a question about his diminished influence on the world stage, President Obama described Russia as a "regional power" operating in Crimea out of weakness, not strength.

Noting Russia's long-standing influence in all of Ukraine, Obama said Russian President Vladimir Putin's illegal annexation of Crimea "indicates less influence, not more."

I guess that's why Ukraine's defense minister resigned and Ukrainian troops bugged out of Crimea, leaving it to Russian forces. This is the only "off ramp" that matters in Crimea. Ukraine and its rhetorically florid Western allies took it. Not Putin. Even as the White House insists Crimea is not "lost" (Putin can find it without satellite imagery, after all), the grudging language of concession seeps from every corridor of Ukrainian talks here.

"It's not a done deal in the sense that the international community by and large isn't recognizing the annexation of Crimea," Obama said, before acknowledging the "facts on the ground" favored Russia. "It would be dishonest to say there is a simple solution to resolving what has already taken place in Crimea."

Obama and European leaders are rattled and resentful, thunderstruck that the wispy bonds of international "norms" could be so easily shredded. Fearful of the precedent they appear incapable of reversing, and desperate to limit Putin's ambitions to Crimea, the G-7 nations have effectively conceded Crimea. They threatened "sectoral sanctions" if Putin further bulldozed international law by gobbling up more of Ukraine or plowing into Moldova. Weak or strong, Putin enforces the new Crimean status quo. All he's lost is Russia's G-8 membership pin and decoder ring.

So you are asserting that Obama is, in fact, a king?

Why would I have to do so?

He’s an office holder.

The real “king” of the US constitution is the “we the people.” And that means me and that means you.

And Barack didn’t singlehandedly do this. It needed the winks and nods of half the country.

Because monarchy is the form of government that God allowed. The only one.

That’s not biblically provable. Democracies have come and gone, as have kingdoms.

But philosophically, I agree that people WANT monarchy. The way America was able to fare as well as it did, was that there was a consensus, across all segments of Christendom which constituted an unusually high proportion of early America, that only Jesus should be their king. And so it went, fairly well at first.

Anyhow, people, even conservatives, seem to be perfectly happy with Barack in the role of emperor now. Calvinball being played with Obamacare? The reaction is more a sigh of relief than indignation that We The People are not getting our constitution followed.

You brought up Romans 13. Show me a government other that monarchy in the Bible.

Paul would have known about democracy. Did he ever mention or even allude to it?

Romans 13 is about the servant of the governor. That could fit in a monarchy OR in a democracy.

But I’d say no democracy can operate without some idea of “heaven” behind it. The Greeks did have their pantheon.

God admonished the Israelites not to seek a human king — that it would be a source of trouble. It fell on deaf ears. They insisted on feeling inferior to other peoples, completely missing the point of who God was!

Some analysts contend the seeds were first planted when Russia attacked Georgia in 2008 and the West—led by a war-depleted, lame-duck George W. Bush—didn't even impose low-level sanctions and visa bans in play now. That signaled acquiescence to aggression and probably whetted Putin's appetite.

This statement is blatantly false.

“WASHINGTON — President Bush sent American troops to Georgia on Wednesday to oversee a “vigorous and ongoing” humanitarian mission, in a direct challenge to Russia’s display of military dominance over the region. His action came after Russian soldiers moved into two strategic Georgian cities in what he and Georgian officials called a violation of the cease-fire Russia agreed to earlier in the day.”

McCain has accused Democratic rival Barack Obama of mounting an insufficiently vocal defence of Georgia as Russian troops crossed into its independent territory this week. The Republican’s closeness to Saakashvili has also drawn criticism: the senior foreign policy adviser to McCain was a paid lobbyist for Georgia until three months ago.
