It wasnt supposed to be this way. Republicans in Washington wanted North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis to quickly win the partys Senate nomination and focus entirely on vulnerable Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.
Instead, Tillis faces a May 6 primary thats so crowded it may be hard for any candidate to muster the 40 percent needed to avoid a mid-July runoff. The race also pits two leaders -- Kentucky U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul -- against each other in a proxy battle over the partys future.
Tillis must balance support from national Republicans against the Tea Partys anti-Washington instincts. Fundraisers he held late last year with Karl Rove, former President George W. Bushs key political adviser, turned off activists in the limited-government movement.
When he brought in Karl Rove, that knocked him out of the running for me, said Ann Hilburn, a retired U.S. customs worker from Wilmington, North Carolina. Karl Rove is a moderate and he doesnt like the Tea Party.
The party infighting unnerves some Republicans who worry it could weaken the nominee in a state that may be central to the party winning a majority in the U.S. Senate. Republicans need a net gain of six seats to take control, and the nonpartisan Cook Political Report in Washington lists North Carolina as a tossup.
Most polls show Hagan, a first-term senator, in a tight race with her eventual Republican opponent. Shes faced a steady flow of anti-Obamacare attack ads financed by Americans for Prosperity, a group funded by billionaire energy executives Charles and David Koch. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney narrowly carried the state in 2012, after President Barack Obama won it in 2008.

Greg Brannon for Senate!!
Karl Rove is a pariah to conservatism. He is a money grubbing opportunist, numbers gamer who doesn't really have one conservative bone in his body.
He HATES the Tea Party because his scheming manipulative political machine cannot shape and mold them like they can appeaser Republicans.
Karl Rove needs to be run out of town on a rail. And I can’t stand seeing his little pawn Jeb Bush popping up all over the place either.
Just see my tag line.
Jeb Bush, Romney, Christie, Rove brings them all out at one time or another.
He was a brilliant and powerful power broker, I guess. No he’s an overweight, pushy, tone deaf power broker, living in 1999.
The RNC gives him and themselves too much credence. In four years they may finally give up, but these people are Shakespearean in their clinging to what once was.
What is good for the country, our kids, whom we are blindly ripping off, and adherence to the Constitution doesn’t occur to Rove as being part of the equation.
He and the sit-arounds in congress are as bad as the resident they enable for our country - our culture and sovereignty. And he is despcable
Poooooor ‘ol Karl.
Booooooooooooooooooo(bleeping)whoooo.
It looks like a runoff is going to happen!!

We were sure there was going to be a run-off in Texas but we had 6 underfunded candidates and one drunken shyster running against Cornhole and.....well...the rest is History.

Yes, but currently, Thom Tillis is at 27% in an 8 man race and he needs 40% to avoid a runoff. And Brannon is matching him.
I completely agree!! Rove is totally out of touch. His days are over, he made his millions, why doesn’t he go home and let the new guard and the new generation take over??? He is CLUELESS.
Seems like all politicians and all aspiring politicians have dirt in their backgrounds.
Why can’t decent, clean folks run for office.
Tillis is also more liberal than Cornyn on every issue. He is one of the most liberal candidates running as a Republican since 2010. Maybe Mike Rounds is comparable.
Brannon also has a better ground game and more money than those in Texas and it is an open seat.
Huckabee has a candidate running and Tillis is weak on gay marriage.
“Tillis is also more liberal than Cornyn on every issue.”
And so naturally he would be the most attractive candidate to Rove, McConnell and Burr! So typical!
