Las Vegas, NV – Majority Leader Harry Reid today announced that Senate Sergeant at Arms Terry Gainer will depart this spring after more than seven years in the position:

“Terry has spent 47 years of his life dedicated to law enforcement at the federal, state, and city level and throughout his years of military service.  I know he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Irene, their six children, and 14 grandchildren, and also to pursuing private sector opportunities,” said Reid. “Terry is one of the finest public servants I have ever met and I am grateful for all he has done for our community.”

Gainer will depart as the longest serving Senate Sergeant at Arms since World War II and the first to have held both that position and that of Chief of the Capitol Police. Chief Gainer led dramatic improvements to the physical safety of the Capitol complex, provided vital communications to the Senate community in times of emergencies, vastly improved Senate IT infrastructure, and the launch of countless new services for Members, their staffs, and constituents. “Serving the Senate family and the Capitol community has been a rare privilege. The Sergeant at Arms organization continues to exceed expectations.”

Replacing Gainer will be current Deputy Sergeant at Arms Drew Willison. Willison has spent most of the last seven years as Gainer’s deputy after many years as a senior staffer on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Additionally, Michael Stenger will be appointed as the next Deputy Sergeant at Arms. Stenger came to the Sergeant at Arms in 2011 after a 35 year career in the Secret Service, including a stint as Assistant Director, the number three position in the organization.

47 years is a long time. Glad to see he is going to enjoy his retirement. It would be interesting if he wrote a book about his many years.

I think it’s just time to retire. He wouldn’t have held the position for 7 years under Dingy Harry if he hadn’t satisfied him in every way.

I bet if we could find out, it takes just seven years in that position to qualify for another gov’t pension.
