John Kerry likens Crimea 'fervor' to WWII build-up

US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Russia on Tuesday against any military incursion into eastern Ukraine and likened the "nationalistic fervor" fueled by the Crimea crisis to the build-up before World War II.

Any moves by Russia to march into eastern Ukraine "would be as egregious as any step that I can think of that would be taken by a country in today's world, particularly by a country like Russia, where so much is at stake," Kerry said. (SNIP) Kerry said comments from Putin about what was happening in Crimea "just didn't jive with reality or with what's happening on the ground."

"And the president may have his version of history, but I believe that he and Russia, for what they have done, are on the wrong side of history."

lets not get carried away just yet.

Kerry said "… particularly by a country like Russia, where so much is at stake, …".

I don't see where so much is at stake. Unless it's Obama's feelings about being made a fool of. Which is dumb, because he proves he is a fool every single day no matter what is going on in the world. Some of our people get assassinated by Muslims and no protests from Kerry. China is on the move against all it's neighbors and no protests from Kerry. North Korea and Iran are belligerent towards us and no protests from Kerry. Totally inconsistent. Unless the Obama government intends to beef up our military, Kerry should keep his mouth shut at this time.

If Kerry found a Tea Party in Russia THEN there would be trouble. In the meantime nobody cares what this potato faced horseman and his half white bastard man child master thinks. When your sanctions amount to “I’m going to inconvenience a dozen Russians” is all you got you deserve to be laughed at.

Inconvenience is not even close to what he did to the oligarchs. He told them a week before that they were going to sanction them. Then we all watched as all of their money left the country.

What we did was, in truth, give them a chance to move all of their assets and not worry about a thing.

It is worse than ineffective.

"And the president may have his version of history, but I believe that he and Russia, for what they have done, are on the wrong side of history."

What part of the following history is Russia on the wrong side of?

Perhaps Kerry should read up on his history before making ignorant statements. It seems to me that there are many relevant factors and Russian interests in Crimea on the "right" side of history.

1783: Russia annexed Crimea.

1853: The Crimean War began, lasting three years. Russia lost to an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain and Sardinia. Crimea remained part of Russia.

1917: Crimea briefly became a sovereign state before becoming a base for the White Army of anti-Bolshevik forces in the Russian War.

1921: The peninsula, now called the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, became part of the Soviet Union.

1942: Nazi Germany took control of Crimea.

1944: Joesph Stalin forcibly deported all Muslim Tatars, a group of 300,000 who had lived on the peninsula for centuries, due to members’ alleged cooperation with Germany during World War II. Many returned to Crimea in the 1980s and 1990s.

1945: After World War II, the autonomous Soviet republic was dissolved and Crimea became a province of the Soviet Union called the Crimean Oblast.

1954: Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev transferred the Crimean Oblast to Ukraine. It’s often reported that it was a gesture of goodwill from Khrushchev, who had Ukrainian roots.

1991: The Soviet Union collapsed. Many expected President Boris Yeltsin, the new president of the Russian Federation, to take Crimea for Russia. But he didn’t bring it up during negotiations with Ukraine.

1997: Ukraine and Russia signed a treaty that allowed Russia to keep its fleet in Sevastopol. The agreement’s since been extended, so the fleet is set to remain there until at least 2042.

Breathtaking. A stunning over achievement.

John Kerry, liar extraordinaire and long one of the Peter Principle's many shining stars in GuvCo, has somehow managed to rise far beyond his level of incompetence into uncharted territory.

“This is probably a misquote by an ignorant reporter.”

Like they are going to let any other type of reporter
get anywhere near F’n Kerry. Third grade is the
Peter principal for the Obama regime. If you see colors
and can count to 20 with your shoes on you are way too
intelligent for these clowns and pose am imminent threat
the their insanity.

If Crimean ‘fervor’ is like WWII build-up, who’s playing the part of Neville Chamberlain?

I thought Kerry believed all wars, since WWII, were caused by Genghis Khan???

I just do not know what to believe anymore...The history I was taught and read about, or their version of history...

I’m confused...

(BTW, that was “sarc”)

The situation sounds more like WWI to me. We know Kerry lies so why should we believe what he claims the condition is.

No. He meant jive. It just didn’t play dumb games with reality, like Kerry does as a matter of course. That is meant to be critical. In JFK’s world, one should jive around with reality. Failing to do so is a bad thing.

That would fit.

And the president may have his version of history

The choice of exactly WHICH president he was referring to is left as an exercise for the reader.
