What We Learned In Crimea (Putin Won With Spetnaz Troops Alert)
Washington Post ^ | 03/18/2014 | David Ignatius

The well-organized Crimea operation also suggests improvement in the quality and training of the Russian military. Their troops had operated with far less precision a decade ago in Chechnya and in the 2008 invasion of Georgia . A botched attempt to free 850 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002 resulted in the deaths of 130 of the captives.

Russia evidently has been getting results for increased spending on its military: The 2012 edition of an annual survey by the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated that Russia would spend 3.78 percent of its GDP on defense in 2013, by far the highest amount in more than a decade. Aging or incompetent Russian officers have been purged as part of a modernization campaign.

This Russian army, in short, is not the one that proved so feeble in Afghanistan. It is well-trained and stealthy and effectively uses a “small footprint.” And Putin clearly wasn’t deterred by NATO military moves that signaled a commitment to protect member states — but didn’t convey a willingness to check Russian black operations in a friendly, neighboring region.

Russia won in Crimea using spetnaz - Russian special operations troops. Russia showed it can mount highly sophisticated covert operations to achieve political goals without the drawbacks of a conventional ground invasion. This is clearly not the Soviet Army that invaded Afghanistan or the poorly trained and equipped Russian Army that underperformed so disastrously in Chechenya. Clearly Moscow spent a lot of money to not only upgrade the quality of its troops but also their equipment. These stealthy Russians are winning a lot of respect abroad.

Finally, some military action that the Washington Post can feel good about.

They have upped their game, while we worry about fags.

No, no, no . . . those troops with no insignia were local militia. The Russians told us.

Nice to hear they train with us in Colorado not long ago and we were being called isolationists...

The regular Russian Army still has grave problems. The Spetznaz and airborne troops are good though.

GROM would give Spetznaz a run for their money, if ever the Russians try to attack Poland.

Deniability, my boy. Do you think SEALs wear patches on covert ops? This is that kind of stuff on a larger scale.

While I don’t want to see our kids fight this battle, we could at least arm the Ukranians and galvanize the former Eastern Bloc. I am surprised the Poles have not moved in.

Yeah, I don't see too much coverage of the issue of diversity in the Russian army.

Perhaps they could borrow some of our weapons from Al Qaeda in Libya or Syria. We are just all broke.

Diversity seems to be a leftist value. If you want to call that a value. Apparently, it ranks near the top for the current regime.

IIRC, Ukraine had an army numbering 500,000 when they became independent. They whittled it and whittled it. No one has been paid in months. Ukraine owes everyone. They're like the druggie who asks for a handout for coffee.

We have a lot of Ukrainian immigrants in our town. They come here for....jobs, jobs, jobs....the same reason they came c 1900.

They should all have nukes. Everyone plays nice when a country has nukes. Let them all have them.

It should be mentioned that the troops used in Georgia were not regular Russian Army or Spetznaz - those troops were mostly thugs with guns - there is a name for them but escapes me now.

You know what GayMuzzie is pulling with the US Navy?

He wants to cut it but have it SEEM like it’s staying the same size, so....

He’s re-classifying hospital ships, minesweepers and tiny coastal patrol craft as full COMBAT ships.

Yup.

Also, if you’re a US design company farming out manufacturing to Asia the US gummint will now instead classify YOUR company as a MANUFACTURER, even though you actually DO no manufacturing.

HE NEVER STOPS LYING.

...we could at least arm the Ukrainians...

It would be expensive, and we'd probably have to supply fewer arms to the Mexican drug cartels through Holder's ATF.

On the bright side we could confiscate 'em form Connecticut citizens to give to the Uke Nazis.
