Boeing Source: Missing Plane in Pakistan
Lignet ^ | March 17, 2014, 5:30 p.m. |

The Malaysian government reportedly is investigating the possibility that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 avoided radar detection and landed in Pakistan near the Afghanistan border inside Taliban-controlled territory, according to the UK Independent . . . investigators confiscated a homemade flight simulator from the pilot’s home to see if it reveals any useful information . . . the Malaysian foreign minister told reporters that Malaysia asked several Asian countries for assistance in its investigation, including Pakistan . . . Pakistan dismissed the idea that a Boeing 777 could land undetected inside the country but promised to work with the Malaysian government in its search for the missing plane . . . a LIGNET analyst received information from a source at Boeing that the company believes the plane did land in Pakistan . . . Israel is taking the possibility of a terrorist attack seriously by mobilizing air defenses and scrutinizing approaching civilian aircraft, according to the Times of Israel . . . a Boeing 777 requires a lengthy, 7,500-foot runway, and Pakistan has many of them, meaning Flight 370 could conceivably be hidden in a hangar inside the country . . . U.S. surveillance of the area may be able to shed light on the theory through satellite imagery or signals intelligence.

It’s clearly waiting for its moment. I’m not sure what the target will be, and I’m sure nobody else knows either. The Islamists hate everybody in the “great powers” sphere: the US, the Russians, the Chinese.

I don’t think they’d waste their time on Europe, having effectively subdued it with the Madrid and London bombings, both low-tech but obviously enough to get their point across.

So in my opinion, the target is one of the three above. India might also be a possibility, because India was rather unbowed by the horrible attack a couple of years ago and the jihadis vowed they’d be back. However, I’m not sure India would be a big enough prize for them.

Israel is out of the question because Israel would shoot down an unidentified plane in a heartbeat and also has the technology to monitor its airspace down to the molecule.

Thinking strategically, what would give them the most bang for their buck? I think it would be something symbolic, but I’m not sure what.

I’m not an expert either, in terrorists, but you are more of an expert than I am regarding your field and terrorists (imho). My compliments. Your work is excellent.

Neither was 9/11.

9/11 was the second attempt to destroy WTC. It was a new method, but the event itself was pure, unmistakable terrorism. Suicide bombers used cars and trucks before. This time around they used an airplane. Terrorists were hijacking airplanes before. The OBL/KSM team only combined the two.

However the disappearance of this airplane does not fit the pattern. Terrorists go for terror. They do not go for suspense - they are not after laurels of Steven King and Agatha Christie. Terrorists want maximum carnage, in most horrific way possible. A mere disappearance of an airplane is not carnage. There are no TV operators zooming in on severed arms and legs; there is no recorded voice from some Afghani cave that threatens more deaths if this or that is not done. Terrorism has a purpose. (Those who terrorize without a purpose are called serial killers or active shooters. Adam Lanza seems to be one of those.) This disappearance serves no purpose to the terrorists' cause; there was no demand, there was no threat, there was no communication about this at all. This is why it doesn't fit the pattern. Terrorists don't do it this way because it's not effective.

It is true that absence of closure will hurt ... but who will it hurt? Only the 200 families of dead passengers. Does this mean anything to a terrorist? No, it does not. Terrorists act on the world-wide scene; they do not care about 200 families - they want to shock billions. This is why closure is not a factor here; terrorists simply do not care about hurting feelings of a handful of families. They would gladly exchange that for using this 777 as a dive bomber into a chemical plant. Closure would be just one more injury to a specific family, if the pilot wanted to kill their family member for a very personal reason. Did any of the two Malaysian pilots have anything to do with any of the mostly Chinese passengers? Purely statistically, it's not likely. I can understand jealousy with regard to a crewmember... but I trust that the police will check those leads. Even then a mere jealousy does not force the killer to deny the closure to the family. This scenario also does not make much sense. If so, we should listen to the good advice of Mr. Sherlock Holmes: after you dismiss everything impossible, whatever remains has to be the truth.

I have taken off from short runways where they backed the plane up until the wheels were hanging off the runways, they set the brakes, gunned the engines and popped the clutch so to speak. It was a rush.

It clearly took a lot of work to research and produce that post. Kudos on a cogent analysis we can all learn something from.

I can just imagine a rude, crude may not work, may snap off the landing gear cable affair that basically is cables that will pull the jet very similar to how the Wright brothers launched the Kitty Hawk, except I would use a stationary high speed winch, of course there is a disconnect, breakaway linkage, but just in case some reader gets upset and says it won’t work because the cable cannot come loose, I say YES IT CAN because I said it would so there.

Saying that (sorry about my attitude, getting tire of people all pissed off because they cannot understand “stuff”)it also very possible to attach some JATO packs.

its absurd but make a bungee heavy enough, attach it to the forward gear, pull back the 777....

yeah that is absurd, but what a great Youtube it would make!

If you'll click on the links I left of those airports, it'll take you to what I found.
Also http://skyvector.com/ can give you plenty of information, if you'll expand it out and change the views from "World Hi" to "World Low" to "World VFR".
Then move the pim to where you want it and get a closer view.

Thanks. Working off cell has definite disadvantages. Lol.

Have you considered making your information a seperate thread.?

It’s the best analysis I’ve seen yet here or on TV.

Great work Yosemitest

Did you know that she was going to the area? Could she be the target?

WASHINGTON — First lady Michelle Obama will travel to China this month with her daughters, Malia and Sasha, and her mother, Marian Robinson, for a trip built on the theme of education, her office announced Monday.

The March 19-26 trip will include a visit with her Chinese counterpart, Peng Liyuan, who is a popular folk singer and the second wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The trip will be Michelle Obama’s first to China. Her itinerary includes stops in the Chinese capital, Beijing, on March 20-23; Xian on March 24; and Chengdu on March 25-26.

"there is a contingent of FReepers that insist it crashed into the ocean without a trace of debris or other evidence."

Would our SOSUS array pick up the sound of a jet liner smashing into the ocean?

That is understood. However none of this is a typical terrorist's modus operandi. Let's presume that the pilot got mad and wanted to kill every Chinese person he can reach (since most of his passengers were Chinese.) He is expected to fly over China and he has permission. He will be flying over thousands of soft targets - residential areas of high density, chemical plants, hospitals... wouldn't it be reasonable for a terrorist to drop his plane onto one of those targets? He can't possibly not know about 9/11, being a pilot and all.

Me? I’m guessing it’s intended to be a dam buster, a smaller aircraft would do just fine for any ordinary structure. Perhaps a massive shaped charge under the flight deck to bore a deep hole in the face, with an even more massive main charge of some relatively insensitive explosive to be rammed into that hole before detonation.

Compare to an M180, only writ LARGE...

OK, now think the Three Gorges Dam.

More or less along a normal Malaysia Airlines route, they wouldn’t even need to repaint more than maybe the tail number.

Either eliminate a scheduled Malaysia Airlines flight en-route and slip into its scheduled and expected flight path, squawking its expected number or hack the system and tell the Chinese to expect an extra flight, perhaps a “charter” that day.

How much damage would a hole in the Three Gorges Dam do downstream, hmmm?
