A Chinese family successfully rang the mobile phone of a passenger on board Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 which is still missing after it lost contact with the ground on Saturday.
A video clip of a man dialing the number of his elder brother was shown on Beijing Television's news bulletin. The call got connected, but no one picked up.
The man, who did not give his name, spoke to reporters at a Malaysia Airlines briefing in Beijing. He claimed that he made a total of three calls, but no one answered.
Desperate family members have asked Malaysia Airlines to use satellite technology to pick up the mobile phone signals of passengers before their phones run out of batteries.
I doubt it would happen if it crashed into the sea. Blowing up is different because small objects survive explosions, but then going down into the ocean...
This is strange to say the least, that it would ring, unless the explosion propelled it far enough to land on dry land.

Would think that any and all types of phone call completions are possible, depending on the subscriber setup. For example, if the number is a work line that forwards to other numbers.
Sure...if the decedent lost his phone in Kuala Lumpur.
Which seems the most likely explanation to me.
If that phone was in water it would be dead. Strange.
Possibly a “waterproof” case and it’s floating?
So does mine, but it doesn’t ring. It goes straight to voicemail.
Maybe his brother forgot the mobile phone at home or somewhere else.
I wish there were another explanation, but my first thought is that maybe the phone was not on the plane. :-(

the phones get answered and you can leave a message that is relayed to the user when they are ready for it

I made a comment that the plane was hijacked, flown at wave top level, has landed under the radar and the passengers are being held for ransom.
But some superior mined posters thought my idea was idiotic.
On second thought, everyone else here is right. Come to think of it, my cell phone broke, and people tell me they still are able to text message it.
The phone is not ringing. The caller just thinks it is from the sound generated by the service provider’s equipment. Besides, there is no service way out where it crashed.

This only works if you make it known you have the plane and the Pax.......Keeping it a secret don’t get you any $$$$
Well, where would they land it? You don’t operate a 777 from a dirt strip hacked out of the brush on some deserted island and the airplane hasn’t turned up anywhere else.
As for texting or calling a phone that is dead/turned off, sure you can send a message to it. The network simply holds onto it until the phone is operating again and then it forwards it. Same with a call but you won’t hear it ringing as it’ll simply go to the network account and store it.
