As a kid I would pour over a RS catalog, dreaming of SW radios and dual cassette players. Bought electronics kits to make things you could not buy, like one I made which was a SW adapter that made my AM car radio pick up world broadcasts.

wonder - do kids do things like that anymore?

That’s a great story and would really take some know-how. In the last 10 years they had a thick catalog. I don’t know if they still do that. They must have something still.
