Book Review: 'Sexplosion' by Robert Hofler
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 28, 2014 | JOHN HEILPERN

In the spring of 1971, President Nixon was chewing the fat in the Oval Office with John Ehrlichman and Bob Haldeman when the president brought up an episode he'd just seen of CBS's new hit TV show "All in the Family." He was as mortified as Archie Bunker to learn that Archie's old friend, a former NFL linebacker, was gay.

"I turned the goddamned thing off. I couldn't listen anymore," President Nixon fumed. "Goddamn it, I don't think you should glorify on public television homosexuality. . . . What do you think that does to eleven- and twelve-year-old boys? . . . You know what happened to the Greeks? Homosexuality destroyed them. Sure, Aristotle was a homo, we all know that. So was Socrates."

"But he never had the influence television had," Ehrlichman chimed in.

Robert Hofler's "Sexplosion," a provocative romp through the culture wars and the transformation in America's sexual politics, illuminates how out of touch Nixon actually was with the country's rapidly changing mores. By the end of its first season, "All in the Family," which dealt with such hot-button topics as impotence, race, sex on Sundays (and Archie Bunker's homosexual friend), was the No. 1-rated show in the U.S.

Nixon, despite his many flaws, had more sense than many of our current leaders. Now the media is glorifying it non-stop.

“America, it is said, is suffering from intolerance — it is not. It is suffering from tolerance. Tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded. ” — Venerable Fulton J. Sheen

Norman Lear’s influence is really huge and not appreciated historically.

This show doesn’t hold up well because as with most of Lear’s shows it was propaganda.

Homosexuals at 2-3% of the population.

There is a homosexual character on every single TV show. Every single one.

Hollyweird is shoving this down on throats as prescribed by Saul Alinsky and the communist manifesto.

I’d take tricky Dick over just about any of our modern politicians.

The thing is, Archie’s character was designed to be non-sympathetic by Lear who called Archie Bunker “a horse’s ass”.

It backfired and Archie became a very endearing sympathetic figure. Kind of a tragic hero trying to hold on to a way of life under attack from all quarters. Yes, he was rough around the edges, but there was always a fundamental logic to his view point.

Actually, at the end of the series, he becomes the heroic figure. Meathead has an affair and leaves his family. Archie, on the other hand, after Edith dies, ends up raising an adopted daughter. If Lear was trying to portray him as a horse’s ass, he sure did a poor job of it.

Locked in this position, staring at each other, Archie whimpers that Michael thinks Roger is straight and Steve is gay. The camera zooms in on Steve’s face.

“He’s right, Arch,” Steve says. “About all of it.”

>>every famous person in history was gay, according to the nuts<<

A lot of them were. For example, Hitler was a butch homosexual.

He tried to pen Archie as a horses ass, but the character became sympathetic anyway and took it out of his hands. Audiences responded to Archie as a character.

I understand Meathead was supposed to be the straight man and voice of reason - the central character of the show as Archie’s foil, but as Archie became more sympathetic ans accepted by audiences, the son in law character went from being a wise left of center character promoting the leftist themes as rational, to becoming a slacking radical hippy freak.
