I made a zip gun at home—fired 22 long bullet. Used a nail and a door latch and rubber bands, and a trigger. I had great fun plinking with it, even built in safety elements to prevent flash back. Til a cop took it away from me—He complemented me on my workmanship—didn’t even tell my father—but then this was in the 1950s.

I wish you had a photograph of it. Funny about 22 Longs because for some reason as a teen that is what I alway bought for the matches we would have. It was my Ruger Single Six vs. my pal’s Colt Scout and the competition was fierce. We fired a five-shot group free-style (resting the revolver), a five-shot group two-handed standing, and a five-shot group one-handed standing at 25 yards. Total score of the combined sets won the match.
