Ukraine's western region of Lviv has reportedly declared independence from the central government.
Hours after protesters seized the prosecutor's office in central Lviv and forced a surrender by interior ministry police, the executive committee of the region council - also called the People's Rada claimed control over the region.
"The regime has begun active military action against people. Dozens of people have been killed in Kiev and hundreds have been wounded. Fulfilling the will of society, the executive committee of the Lviv region's council, the People's Rada, is assuming full responsibility for the fate of the region and its citizens," read a statement.
The executive committee was led by Petro Kolodiy, chairman of the Lviv region's council.
Lviv lies close to the border with Poland and was one of the venues for the Euro 2012 football tournament. Over the past months, the city has become a powerful engine driving the insurgency against president Viktor Yanukovich.
The region, which is traditionally hostile to the easterner Yanukovich and favours closer ties with the European Union, has a population of 2.5 million.

Russia shuts off gas to Ukraine
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7806870.stm
1 January 2009
Russia's gas giant Gazprom said it turned off the taps at 0700 GMT, when its contract to supply Ukraine ended.
Ukraine insists it has paid off its debts to Gazprom, but Russia contests this. The two countries have also failed to agree on a price for 2009.
The EU urged Russia and Ukraine to resume negotiations and not to let the dispute disrupt supplies to Europe.
A similar row between Gazprom and Ukraine at the beginning of 2006 led to gas shortages in several EU countries.

Europe has lost supply through those pipelines before due to the Ukraine vs Russia disputes.
“The EU wants the Ukraine because it has one of the best growing conditions on Earth for wheatand they need it to feed the 350 million-plus population of central and western Europe.”
Nonsense. The EU can simply buy Ukrainian wheat. You don’t have to buy the multi-billion cow when all you want is the milk. I doubt the EU even wants Ukraine in the EU. Ukraine is ridiculously almost ludicrously poor by EU standards. Their nominal GDP per capita is only a third of that of Mexico. That’s why visa and trade deal with the EU was such a big deal for them. It was the only thing giving the youth any hope for a better future. EU commercial regulations are oppressive, but it’s nothing compared to the oppression of having to fight through eastern european political corruption.
Or the loving embrace of a corrupt, broke & tyrannical EU, comprised of RAT bastard liberals, socialists & global warming bigots, of whom 0dumb0 is in full agreement with. I would trust the current Ukranian govt or Putin about a thousand times more than the RAT bastard liberals, socialists, progressives, communists, fascist in this country led by 0dumb0 and the democrat media in this country. The fact that 0dumb0 & liberals & the media in the USA are backing the rioters & protesters, is good enough reason to back the current Ukranian regime & Putin. He's got a lot more honesty & integrity than 0dumb0 does!
You should check it out as an adult. It’s very different than western Christianity. The beliefs are essentially the same but the practices and traditions are very different. It goes a long way in trying to understand the mindset of the folks on the lines in Ukraine.
Nor am I.
The Icons have a special draw for me.
Wasn't George Soros behind that one as well?
Am in the middle of a 4-hour history video about Ukraine on youtube. That guy looks like he stepped out of the 13th(?) century when that area was fighting along religious lines (Orthodox vs. Catholic iirc).
If—IF—there to be outside intervention, aren’t there
any other countries around other than the US?
If this is so, so important to Europe, then
how about having Hungary, Romania, Poland, Austria,
Finland, (Germany?) or anybody else over there,
look after problems on their own continent?
Since when did it become “Dial 1-800-USA”?
Russian special forces (clear Russian language heard in the background) in Ukrainian uniforms shoot the crowd to kill (graphic video):

That’s because you don’t follow Putin, or Russia, very closely. And you just admitted it.
I blame George Soros for the Denver Broncos. He got to Manning, somehow.
When do the Soviets come rolling in with T-80 tanks blasting away and taking over again.
Brings to mind the Soviets rolling tanks into Prague.
Anything really. Bad weather, flat tire, solar flares...
>>>Half? No. Dont use Common Core math.
According to the Ukrainian Census of 2001, ethnic Ukrainians make up 77.8% of the population. Other significant ethnic groups are the Russians (17.3%), Belarusians (0.6%), Moldovans (0.5%), Crimean Tatars (0.5%), Bulgarians (0.4%), Hungarians (0.3%), Romanians (0.3%), Poles (0.3%), Jews (0.2%), Armenians (0.2%), Greeks (0.2%) and Tatars (0.2%). The industrial regions in the east and southeast are the most heavily populated, and about 67.2 percent of the population lives in urban areas.<<<
It worth mentioning that the majority of the latter 67.2% don’t mind to learn Ukrainian at all. Some of them are speaking ‘surjik’ - a local version of spanglish or a wierd combination or Ukrainian and Russian but it is not considered classy there.

The only problem EU has plenty of food produced by subsidized farmers in France and other places, with better ties to Brussels than Ukraine. For that reason, Ukrainian agriculture may be the second victim of EU agreement (while Russian-bound manufacturing the first). Not to mention a chance to enter EU as a full-fledged member is slim, no matter how careful they are willing to follow EU regulations: ‘Ukraine has to join EU right after Turkey. To bad we all know Turkey is not gonna do it ever ‘- Merkel.
