A Missouri grade school coach has been charged in the murder and kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl whose suspected body was found in his basement with what police said was a gunshot wound to the head.

Craig Wood, a football coach and teacher's aide at Springfield's Pleasant View K-8 School, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Hailey Owens, whose body police believe was found in a storage bin.

The little girl was last seen walking just a block from her home at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday when a terrified couple called 911 to report her seen being swept up by a man in a prowling pickup truck.

Michelle Edwards, who witnessed the attack with her husband, told police that the man driving the vehicle — with long grey hair — pulled over to her and asked for directions, calling, “Hey, come here a minute,” according to the felony probable cause statement.

Edwards said when the child ignored his attempt Wood got out of his car and threw her into his vehicle "like a rag doll."

sad day for us who live near or in the beautiful town of Springfield Missouri. Makes me almost want to lock my door at night. The police officers don’t make big money here, the retirement is not so great, but we are still having trouble making the city budget every year. I always say you get what you pay for. I live out in a county near Springfield. A very large county with very low taxes. We have very little income for our county. Only three cars run at night and impossible for them to cover the whole county. ( starting pay lowest in the state at 25,000 a year). Please forgive us. Please keep the family in your prayers

It IS a tragedy for the murderer in a spiritual sense, because God wants all people to repent and be forgiven.

1 Tim 2 1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

The loss of a soul is completely different issue than the murder of a child in this world of course, but it is a tragedy whenever anyone chooses damnation over salvation. Sadly, this murderer will likely have plenty of time to contemplate his sins in prison. I'd rather send him to Christ posthaste (assuming he's found guilty after a proper trial of course).

Kill the murderers and let God sort them out!

I’m one of those FReepers who oppose “jailhouse justice,” because I believe the state has an obligation to protect those it incarcerates regardless of their crimes. On the other hand, I probably wouldn’t incarcerate very many people. The violent ones would be thinned out substantially (executed), while many nonviolent criminals, like drug users/abusers, would likely be released. Old Testament “eye for an eye” justice works well.

Stringing up is too good for this scumbucket. He needs to endure the same death this little girl did.

A vigilante lynch mob is just what is called for here. It would be appropriate (true) social justice and send a load message to the other perverts.

Recently a friend who works at a large state prison told me the inmates are not kind to those that have hurt children. The examples this nurse gave me are brutal and beyond what I would call torture. Who am I gonna ask for help?.

The guy is as stupid as he looks. He did everything to get caught but call the police on himself. It's a shame the cops weren't able to get to his house in time to save the girl. This scumbag should suffer every day of his miserable life.

A neighbor who witnessed the kidnapping and tried to stop it was on TV this morning. He jumped in his car and followed the pickup (maybe another neighbor did too) but eventually the kidnapper got away from them in traffic. They got the license plate number which is why the police tracked down the kidnapper quickly, but not quickly enough.

In exigent circumstances such as this, I’m amazed that they cops didn’t get a search warrant for this guy’s house till the next morning. Obviously, this gave him extra time to kill the little girl and clean up the mess.

They'll no-knock a jay walker but not this monster. Evil. Pure evil.

Prayers for Hailey and her family.

A self centered culture that has pretty much rejected God is now producing more the of worst individuals is no surprise.
“Without God, everything is permissible.”

Thanks for the quote. I'm teaching the French Revolution and kids wonder how french society could break down so much. I'll add this quote to the discussion of how the Dechristanization of France was like a ship being cut from its anchor.

There’s a reason it’s call the criminal justice system. The justice system is out to protect the criminal, not the victim. Imo, four years is plenty of time to go through the appeals process, then it’s time to flip the switch. In cases like this, finding the nearest tree is too long.

“...I believe the state has an obligation to protect those it incarcerates regardless of their crimes...”

I agree with you. The calls for other prisoners to mete out “justice” always disturb me.

That’s not what that stuff is about, anyway, prison rapists aren’t doing that for the good of society, it’s very foolish to think that they are.

That’s not an “exact” quote; it is taken from the Russian to English translation. The idea is definitely there, though. It’s from “The Brothers Karamazov”.

“He said he always had a subtle mistrust of men who worked in grade schools in teaching or administrative positions.”

I coached my daughter’s soccer team for 7 years. I was always VERY aware of that viewpoint that people might have (I’m a guy). One girl would come running up to me at the start of practices and games and give me a huge hug each time - akward! (Luckily she stopped by the time she was 12 or so!).

As a result the state doesn't have the stuff it needs for the execution.

One of many reasons why we need to go back to public hangings in the courthouse square. Rope is available at any hardware store.

No reason why we couldn't. Deleware hung a guy back in 1996.

I coached my daughters' t-ball and soccer teams. I would still do it but my daughters grew up.

Dads coaching their own kids' teams are totally acceptable. Now I would just be some weird old guy hanging around other people's kids.

Maybe someday I can coach my grandkids' teams.

Firing squads are also acceptable. Utah executed a murderer by firing squad in 2010.

Unfortunately, Utah has banned firing squads for the execution of anyone convicted after 2004.
