The rise in the number of mobile device theft all across the United States has prompted several Senators to introduce a smartphone kill switch on the federal level. This past Thursday, a proposed law called the Smartphone Theft Prevention Act was introduced by Democratic Senators Barbara Mikulski (MD), Amy Klobuchar (MN), Richard Blumenthal (CT), and Mazie Hirono (HI).

I have a smart phone, I keep music, and photos on it, I do NOT BANK on it. I only bank/pay bills on my home computer or in person.

We had new windows put in, 18 months interest free, if you open a Lowe’s account. Well IF you have a Kroger’s that does gas points, you can buy Lowe’s gift cards, which are twice the point value at the moment toward cents off your gas along with your groceries. Buy it with a 1% back credit card. Take your paper bill and gift card to your local Lowe’s (cannot use gift cards online with them) and pay your bill.

You win 2 ways. There are some months gift cards are 4 times the points, food cards were this month for 2 weeks, bought our Valentine dinner Chilli’s card, got 4 times the points. Picked up some other fast food cards to boot lower amounts, but it all is extra gas points. Nice to have a $1 off a fill up. Hubby fills my low driven car from a 5 gal can, then takes it and the full time van up and fills both, saves $1 off up to 35 gals of gas.

We keep gift cards for those type places, and buy extra if we travel. As our grands and great grands are not easy to buy presents for it is simpler to buy a gift card to their favorite shopping place. Like Bass Pro for our oldest Grand son. BE SURE TO KEEP THE RECEIPTS or send them with the BD or Christmas card you send them.

I did my Christmas shopping in 10 minutes and had 4 times the points off those cards. With 7 Grands and 5 GGrands that is a lot of gift cards. Even our presents to ourselves came from Amazon Prime. Did not have to set foot in NON Christ friendly mall stores either.

How much info can they get on a smart phone that only has music and photos on it and 1 game? No banking.

1 call to your carrier should shut the number down.

This satisfies most of the requirements for bad legislation:

It doesn’t address the problem
It moves or expands the problem elsewhere
It restricts the freedoms of honest citizens
It criminalizes normal activity
It provides loopholes for the actual criminals
It creates, expands or further empowers bureaucracy
It gives congress the warm fuzzy feeeeeeeling that they are doing something

What happens when a hacker finds the key to the kill switch and kills everyone’s smart phone permanently?

The world would suddenly have a billion expensive paperweights.

Cell phone cameras can be set to send video directly to the cloud, i.e. the internet thereby protecting the videographer’s content against confiscation.

That’s true, in fact the company I work for will not allow most Android phones for that very reason.

They need to be able to perform a ‘Remote Wipe’ and most Androids can be easily circumvented to prevent that.

Why is filming police a problem?

Beats me.

A Jury can see video of police telling a handcuffed and restrained homeless man that they are going to f--- him up, watch them beat him to death, and still acquit.

Of course, killer cop "Officer" Ramos did get booed out of a Fullerton Denny's by the customers...

It’s amazing that when I transferred my old Cell phone account to my new one A.T@ T were able to turn the old phone into a paper weight within minutes. So what’s the big deal.

I think these government clowns want to have the ability to takeover the whole cellular network at their conveniance.Kind of like they did in New York City following the 911disaster.

I don’t trust this Obama government and they shouldn’t be given the authority they ‘re asking for.

Dito, and the only reason I have a flip phone is they forced me off the analog car phone when analog cellular died.

Not only does my Moto X have a kill switch, i can also go to a web page and find it with google maps. I can also find my kids phones, which will usually tell me where they are. Google + Moto.
