Drought Wars: Where did the farm water go?

Where did that farm water go? That’s a major question stalking California during its record drought.

The finger-pointing sure is under way. On Feb. 4, environmental writer Dan Bacher pointed at state water managers, claiming they made the California drought worse by taking water from Northern California farms and fish and sending it to Southern California cities.

Bacher claimed 827,000 acre-feet of water was sent to Southern California in 2013, where some of it was consumed by cities and some stored in Castaic Lake and Pyramid Lake, both North of Los Angeles. Bacher’s claim evokes the image of another water grab by Los Angeles almost a century ago and dramatized in the move “Chinatown.”

However, Bacher is talking about water from the State Water Project that primarily serves Southern cities, not Central Valley farms where the farm drought has hit the hardest.

three Northern California Democrats with large environmentalist constituencies favored sending the water to the fish in Northern California. They were Reps. Jared Huffman, Mike Thompson and George Miller.

Thus contributing to the income inequality that Obama is so concerned about. Their action will result in the loss of jobs and more expensive food.

Illegal immigrants drinking the water Americans won’t use to farm with, or something like that.

locally: "The first weather system was anticipated to start Wednesday night and last through Thursday, dropping up to an inch of rain. After a short break Thursday night and Friday morning, more rain will fall through Sunday night. Another 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected to fall during the weekend storm."

Desalination works great in Israel next to the Mediterranean, but cannot help a land-locked Californicatia. The state can’t get to the pacific because it has impenetrable high mountainous ridges. These are recent mountain ranges, made up of igneous leftists and other sorts of miscreation.

I bet it went the same place as the water in “Chinatown.”

Illegal immigrants drinking the water Americans won’t use to farm with, or something like that.

With 2.6 million illegal immigrants in California using 100 gallons per person, per day, these extra people consume over 94 billion gallons of water per year. This is about 1/3 of the acre-foot shipped south!

But illegal immigration has no effect on California!

I can’t believe this question has to be asked. Most of the water from the central basin was dumped down the river to help the Delta Smelt because apparently the water was too salty in the bay. While the extra water did reduce the salinity, the fish died off anyway. So where did the water go? Into the ocean. For what? Nothing. And now all the liberals are shocked there is no water on a drought.

Next step: The Great Central Californian Dust Bowl.

When Californians are shivering in the dark and dying of thirst... maybe THEN they might wake up and realize what the Democrats have done to them...

na! that would be racist!

(and would take a brain)

Yes, I understand those intractable land formations are difficult, if not impossible, to navigate, because they are thick as a brick and twice as stupid. It’s too bad plastique can’t be used to create a smooth path through them.

I hope the water pirates start jumping out of windows.

In Centex we have a 4-yr drought that apparently is never going to end.

Let it rain!

Something to keep in mind here is that water consumption by humans is dwarfed by most agricultural and industrial uses. This is why one of my guiding principles of human settlement, land development and civil engineering is that water resources should be used as a rigid determinant of where many land uses should be permitted. If an area doesn't provide enough rainfall to support more than X people, Y head of cattle, or Z acres of orange groves, then it probably isn't a good idea to plan and design around values that exceed X, Y and Z in this case.

There's always room to use conservation, creativity and technology to push the limits on X, Y and Z -- but I would much rather see these as interim measures or stop-gap measures for unusual conditions.

Desalinization would help the cities and give them less reason to steal the farmer’s water.
