Racing to Save the Stray Dogs of Sochi

SOCHI, Russia — A dog shelter backed by a Russian billionaire is engaged in a frantic last-ditch effort to save hundreds of strays facing a death sentence before the Winter Olympics begin here.

Already, hundreds of animals have been killed, with the local authorities apparently wanting the stray dogs cleared from the streets before Friday’s opening ceremony.

While the authorities say the dogs can be wild and dangerous, reports of their systematic slaughter by a pest removal company hired by the government in recent months have outraged animal rights advocates and cast a gruesome specter over the traditionally cheery atmosphere of the Games.

KEYWORDS:
A great many of the "feral" dogs I've seen have collars and are pretty friendly. My hunch is that they belonged to someone very recently. The govt forced people out of their homes so they could build hotels and wouldn't let the owners take their dogs with them.

After my traveling the world in the Navy, let me warn people who love animals not to go to most other countries. The way their dogs, cats, and other animals are casually mistreated will bring an animal lover to tears.

Russia should have called in an exterminator for the Muslims, not the dogs.

Oops - Russians have lots of experience dealing with Muslims. Perhaps Putin is baiting them?

If they do attack the Olympics, it would give him an excuse to “cleanse” Russia of Muslims.

Hmmn - the Chinese might then decide to deal with their Muslims, too.

One may only hope.

Ha, we don’t know that, anyway, I just read that there are lots of feral dog packs roaming around Russia, and they cross borders into other countries as well, so as long as they do the culling in a humain way, it is fair enough with me

In Thailand they have the same problem. My in laws were recently stationed there and if you venture outside the walled American compound the stray dogs are everywhere.

News Bulletin: Most of the rest of the world isn’t like the U.S.

Of course we’re moving headlong into being like the rest of the world.

I wonder if they are going to ignore all the bad things about Brazil in the lead-up to their Olympics.

And believe me, things are just as ugly there, if not moreso than in Russia.....but I get the feeling the Brazilians will get a pass from the media.

The govt forced people out of their homes so they could build hotels and wouldn't let the owners take their dogs with them.

I maybe misheard, but it's my understanding is that was "no there there" before the area got the Olympics....actual Sochi is sumpin like 80 miles away.
