GOP Establishment Rushes to Save Thad Cochran (should have retired!)

Mississippi Republican Sen. Thad Chochran is in trouble, and the GOP establishment is pulling out all the stops to save him.

A pro-Cochran super PAC associated with former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is already on the airwaves to define upstart conservative state Senator and challenger Chris McDaniel five months before the primary.

And even Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, who on Sunday endorsed Cochran, criticized the group on Monday.

“I’m disappointed in that – it’s just not something that’s necessary,” Bryant said on Monday, according to the Clarion-Ledger. “I would urge them to stop the Republican-on-Republican attack. I believe it was Ronald Reagan who talked about the 11th commandment – thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican.”

The New York Times reported that now-lobbyist Barbour, who is said to have purchased Newt Gingrich's megaphone before the GOP's historic "Contract with America" election in 1994, will help raise money for the pro-Cochran "Mississippi Conservatives" super PAC. The super PAC on Friday started to run an ad, which will run statewide for three weeks, that attempts to define McDaniel as someone who is not as conservative on Common Core, deficit spending, and tort reform as he may claim. Those three areas coincidentally may be Cochran's biggest weaknesses as he tries to ward off a challenge from McDaniel, who has gotten the support prominent conservative organizations, in what will be a low-turnout primary.

Henry Barbour, Haley's nephew who is advising the super PAC, conceded to the Times that Cochran is vulnerable in this political climate and that his nomination would not be a "cakewalk." Cochran is a six-term senator whom Time magazine described as a "seasoned appropriator" who is a "spitting image of the Republican establishment" running in a deeply anti-establishment and anti-Washington climate.

Bush’s opponent is a pastor named David L. Watts, 46, of near Longview. He has no name ID or money. Why would you think a Texan would repudiate George P.? George P.’s Wikipedia article writes that he appears to be a shoo-in:

Bush is considered[by whom?] the presumptive Republican nominee to replace him and shoo-in general election winner for the office in 2014.[19]

Bush’s only opponent in the Republican primary scheduled for March 4, 2014 is David L. Watts (born 1967), a minister who describes himself as a “Conservative Republican” and lives in a rural area between Gilmer and Longview in East Texas. A native of Mobile, Alabama, Watts, the son of a pastor, was reared in Deer Park and Humble, Texas, and in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Louisville.[21]

Evidently you are missing the panic coming out of McCornyn’s campaign

I surely hope you are right, and I am wrong. But what you call "panic", Cornball calls "confidence".

I see you put Alexander, but people know him as Lamar! And TN thinks highly of the status quo too.

Chris McDaniel is much older than Thad was when MS sent him to the House in 1972. People in MS like an old-style incumbent when he is available to “serve.”

I checked, McDaniel is seven years older than the popular Cochran was when voters sent him to the House by a narrow vote in 1972.

That is why they created a 6 year senate term with staggered classes. They did this so that some young Hitler could win the presidency, could have his party carry the House, but he would only have 1/3 of the senate.

BULLS#*^T

What history book have you been reading.

It's time your read the federalist papers, because the thing the founding fathers feared the most was the possibility of a KING!

That is why they set it up for each state to elect their US Senator from the their State House, which would have it's pulse on the PEOPLE!

You may have confused the fact that those with property only had the right to vote, but that was because they wanted to ensure the voters had a real stake in keeping the elected official freedom friendly.

You have a twisted idea of what was in the minds of the founding fathers.

Time to raise the stakes for not representing the people.

Obama executive order No. 1: No pension for congressmen or senators who lose reelection, and thou shalt not lobby.

There, fixed it!

You forget the 17th Amendment which caused the Senate to be directly elected. The left has watered down the original Constitution. You have no argument.

I so pray Lamar will take a fall, too. He’s become such a disappointment!

You’re so right that our conservative Southern states should have no trouble sending TEA Party patriots to DC.

I’m so happy that I finally got around to attending the local TEA Party meetings! Such a wonderful group of folks, and mostly men who actually get things done, so you know I’m right at home and very comfortable around them. I like doers and these well-connected guys back up their talk.

Oh yeah and good on Gov. Bryant for taking issue with those ads. After last night’s meeting, I’m pretty much convinced that Bryant’s “endorsement” of Thad was one of protocol, and not even lukewarm.

He was forced by tradition and decorum... but that was a half hearted endorsement at best! On to VICTORY!!!

It’s not about the way he walks, it’s about the way he votes and spends tax money.
