I was six years old when the Nautilus was launched. I got a toy Nautilus in a cereal box with a little compartment that held baking soda, IIRC. The boat would submerge and surface as the CO/2 was generated.

Rickover was an extremely controversial figure in the Navy. I don't know all the ins and outs of his career, but I thank the Lord for our nuclear submarine program.

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

My younger brother had one of those ‘submarines’. IIRC they came with a box of Cheerios or maybe Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. There was a little compartment midships, on the ‘keel’. It had a little metal cap with a hole in it. As you say, when the CO2 built up it would surface then sink again and continue to do that until the CO2 was exhausted. But it worked in water that was only so deep. If the bathtub water was too deep then it would not work. My younger brother was trying to live vicariously. He told me years later that he used to imagine that he was me when he played with that little submarine.....riding the boats and sinking enemy ships. LOL
