With Muslim Brotherhood crushed, Egypt sets sights on Hamas
Reuters ^ | Jan 14, 2014 | Yasmine Saleh

After crushing the Muslim Brotherhood at home, Egypt's military rulers plan to undermine the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which runs the neighboring Gaza Strip, senior Egyptian security officials told Reuters.

The aim, which the officials say could take years to pull off, includes working with Hamas's political rivals Fatah and supporting popular anti-Hamas activities in Gaza, four security and diplomatic officials said.

Since it seized power in Egypt last summer, Egypt's military has squeezed Gaza's economy by destroying most of the 1,200 tunnels used to smuggle food, cars and weapons to the coastal enclave, which is under an Israeli blockade.

Now Cairo is becoming even more ambitious in its drive to eradicate what it says are militant organizations that threaten its national security.

Intelligence operatives, with help from Hamas's political rivals and activists, plan to undermine the credibility of Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in 2007 after a brief civil war against the Fatah movement led by Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

According to the Egyptian officials, Hamas will face growing resistance by activists who will launch protests similar to those in Egypt that have led to the downfall of two presidents since the Arab Spring in 2011. Cairo plans to support such protests in an effort to cripple Hamas.

Common sense. Other than the administrations desire for terrorists on Israel's border, no one wants them

"Gaza is next," said one senior security official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. "We cannot get liberated from the terrorism of the Brotherhood in Egypt without ending it in Gaza, which lies on our borders."

It would be great to finally see Hamas on the run. I hope the Egyptian military will work with Israel in joint ops to break the spine of the organization in Gaza, and send them cowering back under the rocks they crawled out from.

Maybe driven underground in Egypt but saying they’ve crushed the MB is wildly optimistic. The brotherhood is one of the largest islamo political organizations in the world.

Abbas of Fattah was elected to a term of office that would have ended years ago. Fattah for all intents does not legally have an elected leader. Nor is it powerful in any way. This is one reason why Abbas can’t strike a deal or even negotiate one. It’s as if Joe Blow was elected to serve as local dog catcher and everybody treats him as the dog catcher in perpetuity because they can’t elect another one or they didn’t like the one they did elect. But Joe is no longer legally in office.

Truly amazing the level of cognitive dissonance the WH and state Dept must be experiencing...dealing with these blood thirsty savages...

I can only imagine Kerry pleading with Abbas to STFU so we can achieve your goals...

Egypt and Israel jointly fighting the Gaza Palestinians - wow, maybe the prophecy about the Moshiach coming after Sharon's death is true!

We should all get on about that internets, and email the Egyptian government and thank them for doing the right thing. We can call it gonzo diplomacy.

Who knows what the actual Egypt government website is? I’ve look around and found some suspicious looking URL.

I’m sure Bongoboy and his boys are all over this aspect.

It almost seems to me that we should be encouraging the Egyptian military in some way. Maybe they will solver the Islamist problem on their own...

“Wouldn’t be amazing if Egypt wind up being the country that helped save Israel...”

It would be even more amazing if they would get on with outing Hitlary for her complicity in their MB problems.

Good news for the Coptic Christians there!!! With the Muzz Brotherhood out they can live in peace. In relative peace. It is hard to live in a Muslim nation but the Egyptian military is secular when compared to the Muzz Brotherhood

I just keep getting more confused. Canada becoming more free and prosperous than the US, the working Mexicans are bugging out for home, Putin makes more sense then the POtuS, and now Egypt leads the way on terrorism.

Let ‘em take it over and annex it. So long as the missiles stop, something’s been achieved.

If they wanted Gaza, they could have had it decades ago. Can’t blame them.
