'Duck Dynasty' has a new fan

A&E ran a bunch of "A Duck Dynasty" shows on Sunday. I finally sat down and watched a couple of them.

First, it is hilarious. You got these "ZZ Top bearded guys" with beautiful wives, a successful business and a wonderful sense of humor. Uncle Si is the greatest "TV uncle" since Uncle Charlie in "My 3 sons"! That fellow SI is a superstar!

Second, Grandpa Phil, the man in the middle of the controversy, looks like the kind of guy that you want to go hunting with. His wife, Miss Kay, is exactly the kind of woman you want cooking your next holiday meal. She loves dogs and spoils her grandchildren.

Third, the brothers, or the guys who run the business, are funny and treat their employees very well. Wonder how many people watching this show wished that they had a boss like "brother CEO"?

Fourth, I saw the Christmas play episode. We enjoyed the family putting a Nativity play at church and treating their friends to food and gifts.

There are a lot of people like the Robertsons in the south, probably everywhere else too. They are good family people who contribute a lot to the nation, from creating jobs to keeping our traditions intact.

For you, New Hampshire, it’s The South.

Not real?

Are you suggesting that Willie and Jase didn't really try to get the bees off the beehive with a shop vac attached to a long PVC pipe?;-)

Seriously tho...nobody actually believes this is real.

NOBODY is as crazy as the Robertsons are. But if anyone were that crazy, they would be from the South...and probably from the swamp.

So, bread and circuses are what you ^require^. Sad.

I think you read something between the lines that wasn’t there. For starters, I consider it to be bread and circuses. Instead of sitting on my butt watching people live lives, I go do the very things they are doing. If I want to watch something entertaining, it’s gonna be adventure. And as Louis L’Amoure points out. It is not healthy or fun to LIVE adventures, but it is exciting to read about them.

I drove through a mild tornado Saturday night. It was a rush and scary as he!!. I’d rather watch it on TV. But Duck Dynasty? Maybe if they had professional actors and script writers with some harrowing adventures I’d want to watch. But that’s missing.

Again, nothing against the show. It’s just that I’d rather DO the things they are doing than watch them do it. Actually I respect that they can get advertisers to pay them money to basically live their lives with a few contrived events and scripts. It’s just not my cup of tea.

It is a feel good show - it gives us a glimpse into a family life that so many may be starved for.

Bingo. You touched on what I was thinking when I mentioned “city slickers” enjoying the show. I moved from my home of 45 years, Seattle, about two years ago to a 12 acre farm/forest in central KY. I expanded it to 32 acres last summer. I’m living what they do on that show. It’s like a corn farmer watching a reality show about corn farmers. A little bit, anyway.

Except I shaved off my beard last weekend. It was coming between me and my wife.

I never watched an episode before last night, and to be honest if it were not for this controversy I may have never watched it.

And it wasn’t what I expected.

I am not saying I am a forever fan, but I will probably watch it again for one reason; these guys, and the show is like able. There is not a snarky, cynical hateful bone in any of them, and given our present day politics of the left and entertainment media in general, whoever picks up this show will get a new fan that A&E never had.

I want the 15 minutes back I spent watching the first 15 minutes.

You'll need 30 minutes back. The 15 spent watching DD and the 15 spent talking about it here at FR.;-)

For the FReepers who actually have watched more that 15 minutes of DD, what you wrote is genuinely funny. You really are limiting your education.

Try taking it from the perspective not substituting real life for watching the show, rather when deciding to sit down, relax and watch a show, compare this to the other choices.

Well, I can’t watch everything. :-)

I’d rather DO the things they are doing than watch them do it.

Not all the things they do. Part of the show is often living with the consequences of making poor choices. And placing God and family above the personal preference.

Which is why GLAAD and the left are now desperate to destroy it.

A&E wanted another "Honey Boo-Boo" and found out that the rednecks they wanted to make fun of made them look dull, petty and soulless.

It sort of feels like The Andy Griffith Show with modern and real people. Duck Dynasty is comfortable. Andy Griffith himself was/is a Liberal, but the show wasn't.

I would say “The South”.

Just to pick nits. But point well taken.

Seen the ads A&E put out and had no desire to watch it, I figured they were just going to make fun of country people in the south. So on a lark I watched one show, thought uncle Si to be the greatest uncle ever. I laughed and laughed at the antics (scripted I’m sure) of these people but in the end, the family at one table, Phil saying the blessing sold me on the show.
I thought how weird it was for this kind of show to be on A&E of all places. Hardly a network of family values.

I hope DD doesn’t go away, but moves, because I will follow it until the Robertsons say they are done.

And that pet photog was as gay as a $2 bill.

As Phil said, "you not from around here, are you?"

I’m still laughing out loud at Uncle Si explaining why it’s Franken scent, not frankincense .... ‘franken’ is a prefix, don’t you know .... Frankenstein, frankenbeans ..... the Wise Men will never be quite the same.
