The new head of Chicago's FBI office said Monday he'll look for ways his agents can do more to help stem homicide rates and other violent crimes in the nation's third-largest city, though he added it's not yet clear what more the FBI can do that it's not already doing.
Robert Holley's comments to The Associated Press in one of his first interviews since assuming his new post a month ago come amid calls by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois' two U.S. senators and others for federal law enforcement to do more to combat violence in Chicago, which has hundreds of homicides each year.
Already, about 25 percent of Chicago agents work violent-crime cases, Holley noted. But given congressional spending constraints, shifting more resources to the gang, gun and drug crimes that underpin much of the violence could jeopardize other investigative priorities in Chicago, including corruption and counterterrorism, he said.
Holley declined to say exactly how many agents in Chicago were assigned to counterterrorism, but he said a greater number is devoted to violent crime.

So, the FBI which is supposed to be protecting us from terrorists and organized crime gets diverted from that critical task to deal with street violence in Chicago.
Lone them a couple of Texas Rangers.
FBI to look for ways to stem Chicago violence
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Declare Chicago to be a gun free zone. Ban evil guns. That ought to work.
Mostly true, but some of the gangs are linked into national gangs. Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings, and some of the larger biker gangs come quickly to mind.
The problem is they refuse to lock anyone up. Juries sympathize with the criminals. they know who all the gang members are by name. they refuse to lock them up and throw away the key. I remember watching a documentary show about prisons with Lisa ling. she asked the guard if they get a lot of new people in the prison. he said, “No it’s the same ones in and out of here.” She looked puzzled.
“So, the FBI which is supposed to be protecting us from terrorists and organized crime gets diverted from that critical task to deal with street violence in Chicago.”
Mission creep. Every liberal president has used the military for humanitarian efforts. The most disingenuous one was when Clinton declared AIDS to be a threat to our national security and sent in Marines in full combat gear to diaper African AIDS babies.
In the Chicago case, it’s like a bad mom telling the kids, I’ll call the cops on you. You just wait! They’ll make you eat your broccoli!
The gangs will laugh. We’ll be lucky if no FBI agents are killed going door to door asking gang members not to shoot anybody.
Might try getting rid of Democrat leadership and social welfare programs.
Chgo murders take place in 4 neighborhoods, all black ghettos, and have been for 50 years. Everyplace else is quite safe. It’s not an entire city to worry about - only about 4 square miles. The cultural rot from within, however, has proved to be intractable.
Midnight basketball.
Meaningful dialog with gang members.
Gun buyback programs.
Sensitivity training for police.
Should have the problem wrapped up in no time.
I know this is bad but:
“Nuke it from orbit, its the only way to be sure”
FBI to help curb street violence in Chicago. The federal government to the rescue!
Liberia
I know! Gun Control!
I’d say gang-bangers are a threat to the nation.
i like it.
or cordon it off.
Gang-bangers should be sent to Gitmo.
That is true; however, criminal activity from gangs is still predominately a local concern involving street crimes, not a national security issue.
I can think of a way, but I don’t think Africa wants them back.
Yep, a high wall and a few checkpoints to get in and out.
Wait a few years, problem solved.
