he New York City Police Department is taking aim at owners of shotguns and rifles capable of holding more than five rounds, demanding such guns be surrendered, altered or taken out of the city.
The demand came in the form of some 500 letters mailed out to owners of registered long guns that are in violation of a 2010 city ordinance. The first option for the letter's recipient is to, "Immediately surrender your Rifle and/or Shotgun to your local police precinct, and notify this office of the invoice number. The firearm may be sold or permanently removed from the City of New York thereafter."
New York has the strictest gun laws in the country, and the city has even tighter restrictions. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, has made it a priority of his to pull illegal handguns off the streets and directly links these guns to violent crimes. But critics say the real problem is illegal handguns in the hands of criminals, not long guns owned by law-abiding citizens.
"We think it's an abuse of power by the NYPD," said Tom King, the president of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association.
Though these notices were not sent out as a direct result of the SAFE Act, New York State Assemblyman James Tedisco said the new law may embolden city police forces to send out similar letters.

Any gun that feeds from a detachable magazine “could” hold more than 5 rounds — whether or not you actually own a 5+ magazine.
Does this include rim-fire?

For what it is worth and IIRC, the Enfields all held 5 in the magazine and one in the chamber. They were chambered in 303 British.
The US Rifle of 1917 which evolved from the P14 Enfield rifle ended up holding 6 rounds in the magazine as the 30'06 is rimless and the 303 British is a rimmed cartridge.
All would exceed the 4 round limit.
Or how about, “I will give up my guns and bullets officer as soon as you give up your guns and bullets.”

... but the P14 / US Rifle of 1917 at least does not have a detachable magazine.
This law makes the 1897 Winchester pump shotgun illegal.
It makes the most popular 22 rimfire rifle in the world ( Ruger 10/22) illegal.
It makes the Mossburg 835 pump shotgun illegal.
A law that bans pump shotguns that are over 100 years old is a law I would be taking to court!

Organizations like Oath Keepers and elected sheriffs give me some hope that not all police officers are going to go along with these unconstitutional gun confiscation schemes.
