Yes, selfies have officially become so ubiquitous that "selfie" is Oxford English Dictionary's word of the year. But maybe, just maybe, we're getting a little too comfortable with snapping pictures of ourselves as we go through our day.
Case in point: On Tuesday, a woman in New York found occasion for a selfie when she witnessed a man attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, according to the New York Post. The paper took a photo of the selfie in progress, and splashed it on the front page with the headline "SELFIE-ISH!" (The Post reports that the man did not jump but was saved by officers.)

The picture is the selfie.
Sociopaths aren’t generally suicidal.
Then there is the one taking the picture of her taking her picture...and getting paid for that. Which makes that okay, while she is evil?
Would it be redundant if I expressed a longing for the good old days?
People have dozens, hundreds, or thousands of “friends” on facebook or “followers” on that Twit site, but noone to take their picture. Or like Obama, they prefer to control the photos in order to place themselves in the best light possible. Whoops, FAIL for this chick. Then again, maybe this was the best light.
The suicidal guy on the bridge is more “rational” than those who pretend that life is good and that they are popular. If he was convinced noone cared about him, perhaps he was right, but that would mean that unlike the empty, self-absorbed selfie universe, he is grounded in reality. There’s hope yet.
Thanks, Ezekiel.
why am I not surprised, it’s new york.
“We are missing another shot....”
And another, and another, and another ad infinitum (literally!)
I like it.
exactly and then what about the person who takes a selfie as they stand back to the photographer from the N.Y.Post, whose in front of the selfie taking blond, whose in front of the man who may just jump . . . ad infinitum . . . and so it goes and so it goes . . ..
Did you ever own a Kodak Brownie Starmite in the good old days?
Oh dear....keep up!!
Too much of modern society is reliant upon overt fakery: fake social media "friends", fake followers, fake bodily "enhancements", fake promises that never even contain a shred of plausibility or legitimacy (like Obamacare - Obama's fake empathy), fake security, the list goes on and on.
No wonder a poor soul would want to jump off of a bridge.
Sure, it's entirely possible that the suicidal person was attempting to escape accountability for a crime or whatever, but considering how many people are feeling hopeless due to the Obamanation, chances are he was at his breaking point and desperate. It's as if news of a photo of a selfie is pointing to the problem all right, one behind the cameras in more ways than one.
As though taking a newspaper photo of a person taking a vanity self portrait in such a circumstance is any more honorable.
I think that there are more of us than we realize who are feeling hopeless and alone. It’s a sad thing, particularly for those who are older, and for whom there may be no happy ending to this. For those facing the end of their lives with our country in these straits, my heart goes out to them. I can’t imagine it. It’s like watching a movie with a bad ending.
“My sympathies are with the suicidal man in this story...”
I’m with you, trisham. The thought of people caring so little about someone preparing to take their own life (and how he got so desperate to begin with). I guess there are a handful of folks still left who would say a silent or aloud prayer for the man vs taking a picture of themselves with the bridge in the background. I am sorry to say that many people look at the loss of life as nothing... a picture in your phone.
Our society has become something that I barely recognize at times.
It’s demoralization to the extreme, but lies are nothing but deception by nature. Therefore, because lies are our present “reality”, I must conclude that the truth is something unseen and opposite of how life appears.
Obama is only king of a grand mirage. His fake throne will collapse from the weight of his narcissism, sending him down the poopchute to the abyss.
Satan’s in no hurry to receive him though, because he’s surely going to clog up the plumbing. Even nasties like Arafat likely went straight down with only one flush.
Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
