I suspect that a substantial number of those questioned for this poll confused legalizing those here illegally with providing them a path to citizenship. But, as Mencken said, no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, so perhaps I’m wrong.

They might as well have used a poll from la raza.
This poll is garbage because it doesn’t present the alternative of attrition-through-enforcement for dealing with illegal aliens.
And even worse than that, it doesn’t inform respondents that the bill would massively increase permanent legal immigration. This is the most unpopular aspect of the bill, so any poll that leaves it out is garbage.

I’m very much in favor of having a path by which illegal immigrants can become legal - and it’s called getting in line behind the folks who want to immigrate legally.

I was in Orange County CA and was talking with two legal immigrants and they are really mad about amnesty. They feel cheated, but then again both of them are extremely productive.

Even on the left wing websites the support for amnesty is at best 50/50.
The invading illegals aren’t immigrants. Immigrants come here within the strictures of immigration law. There is nothing broken regarding immigration law. Those who comply with lawful immigration procedures deserve to become citizens on the lawful schedule. Those who have stolen into the country deserve to never become citizens.
i just do not believe this. most people are not happy to do this for people who break our most basic laws with impunity.
Why aren’t republicans making the point that since Obama is not enforcing current us immigration law, there is little sense in writing new laws?

I tend to agree with you. But words have meaning and advocates of full citizenship will be happy to take poll results like these and use them to justify their position.
