Most Americans back path to citizenship for immigrants

WASHINGTON -- As an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws stalls in the Republican House, most Americans support a cornerstone of the proposed changes -- a path to citizenship for immigrants in the United States illegally, according to new polling released Monday. Support for the citizenship route has held steady at 63% throughout 2013 -- rising slightly among Republicans and dipping among political independents, according to the report from the Public Religion Research Institute. [Updated, 4:25 p.m. PST Nov. 25: Information from a Brookings Religion, Values and Immigration Reform Survey was also incuded.] Earlier this year, the Senate approved a bill including a 13-year path to citizenship for immigrants who pay back taxes and fines and learn English. But House Republicans have refused to consider the bill. The Republicans remain deeply divided on whether immigrants in the United States illegally should be able to gain citizenship at all. The poll showed there is little support for the alternatives: Deportation was backed by 18%, while 14% supported legal status without citizenship.

They must have taken this poll over in Mexico. I do not see how wide support for illegals, can be with all the lies about Obamacare , the economy, millions remain unemployed, borders not secured, hundreds of illegals coming here daily...If anything most Americans back a plan deporting illegals back wherever they came from.

“Most Americans support ... a path to citizenship.”

Do you support having aliens currently in this country in violation of our laws return to their countries and apply for resident alien status, as the aliens legally residing in our country did, with a possibility of citizenship after compliance with our laws and good behavior?

I imagine the question went something like that.

I remember the last poll I heard about had legalizing illegals right now about as unpopular as obomacare.

Who pays for all these polls and how are they asked.

I wouldn’t say I’m against a path to citizenship, my mother was a naturalized citizen. But that’s a far cry from amnesty.

I support a path to citizenship for immigrants, but not for illegal aliens. Immigrants immigranted, illegal aliens illegally trespassed. Entering in through the immigration process makes one an immigrant, illegally sneaking in does not.

Evidently most Americans are fine with another perpetual underclass driving wages down for those of us interested in working for a living. I guess they are also fine with subsidizing that perpetual underclass as well.

Yeah. Words matter. Most people are against obomcare, but fewer are against the affordable care act. They don't know they're the same thing!
That's why oboma stopped calling it obomcare. That's all he called it before his fall, but now calling it obomacare - even by the left wing pundants - is strictly forbidden!

My wife, who is a legal immigrant, has the same view as you. She despises those that cheat the systems while those that went through the full legal process seem to get the shaft. It took us months. We supplied all kind of documentation, paid the fees and waited our turn. That is the only legitimate path to citizenship.
