Butterball has shortage of unfrozen, large turkeys, according to Big Y officials

SPRINGFIELD - Butterball has just announced to officials at supermarkets around the country, including Big Y World Class Markets, that there is a national shortage of their large fresh (unfrozen) turkeys for this Thanksgiving.

A mistake was made in the production of fresh Butterball brand turkeys this year and the company has cut every retailer's allotment by 50 percent, said Claire D'Amour-Daley, Big Y vice president of of corporate communications. The cut represents thousands of turkeys that would have been shipped to Big Y. The same goes for every other retailer, she said.

Butterball's corporate offices did not return calls for comment.

D'Amour-Daley said Big Y has larger fresh turkeys from other brands, frozen larger Butterball turkeys and unfrozen smaller Butterball turkeys.

This shortage involves only Butterball brand large fresh turkeys of 16 pounds or more and not frozen Butterballs of any size or smaller weight fresh Butterballs.

If a turkey is meant to be fresh for Thanksgiving, then it should not have been slaughtered yet. Something stinks about this story.

I spent a ton of years in the frozen food biz, and would bet that the percentage of toikeys sold “fresh” is really minimal.

If you like your butterballs, you will be able to keep your butterballs. Period.

If you like your turkey, you will be able to keep your turkey. Period.

That was going to be my question: how many turkeys are sold unfrozen? (I don’t like turkey, and don’t know). Aren’t they all bought frozen?

Something screwed up pretty bad to have 50% of the volume slashed for the whole country, and being told today - so close to Thanksgiving - is very sort notice.

The shortage is for fresh turkeys only. Most people I know buy frozen. I had no idea that Butterball sold anything fresh until now.

“Looks the old feller is holding a Remington Rolling Block rifle.”

In fact, there actually were shotguns built on rolling block actions.

You’re right, I recall a friend of mine’s dad having an old 16 gauge rolling block back in the 1960s.

Local talk show host “Quinn in the Morning” claims that the turkey stunt actually happened and he worked for the program manager that quoted the “With God as my witness” line.

Buy a fresh (unfrozen) early and often? Does not compute, does not compute.

I have a friend in that business. he tells me the best Turkey you can get is a frozen bird, as they are flash frozen minutes after slaughterer, and are really more fresh than a unfrozen bird,

My mother bought a fresh turkey about 20 years ago. There was a big push to buy "local" (in state), and then it was announced that the labels bled through to stain the skin underneath.

Recall, you say? Nay. People were advised to cut out that section of the skin...

My mother was furious after paying a premium for the local bird, then having to deal that that BS.

Truethat; they are flash-frozens right after slaughter/cleaning/rinsing etc.

As a Farmer for 22yrs, I’ve found that there’s no comparison between frozen, or even just-cooled meat, and fresh-slaughtered and cooked. That’s being at the top of the food chain.
