Which of the 11 American nations do you live in?
Washington Post ^ | 11/08/13 | Reid Wilson

Red states and blue states? Flyover country and the coasts? How simplistic. Colin Woodard, a reporter at the Portland Press Herald and author of several books, says North America can be broken neatly into 11 separate nation-states, where dominant cultures explain our voting behaviors and attitudes toward everything from social issues to the role of government.

“The borders of my eleven American nations are reflected in many different types of maps — including maps showing the distribution of linguistic dialects, the spread of cultural artifacts, the prevalence of different religious denominations, and the county-by-county breakdown of voting in virtually every hotly contested presidential race in our history,” Woodard writes in the Fall 2013 issue of Tufts University’s alumni magazine. “Our continent’s famed mobility has been reinforcing, not dissolving, regional differences, as people increasingly sort themselves into like-minded communities.”

Not sure how much accuracy I would place on their map or their descriptions.

My paternal ancestors moved from the Carolinas southward into GA, then AL, LA, Texas and some into Oklahoma. My Dad's father's family and mother's family move along a similar southern trek, but there were a few decades between their moving, until the 'met' in Texas.

The New Appalachia description makes it sound as if they moved due westward from West Virginia and eastern Tennessee.

I do agree with the author's one assessment:

Notice the putz colored 100% of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota as Yankeedom as well.

The reality is that urban centers in these three states may very well reflect that attitude, but the larger geographical areas outside of them have much more in common with Midlands.

If Texas and like minded states were to secede I wouldn’t hesitate at the chance of going there.

Was reading some history at a Welcome to Louisiana rest stop. They claim to be the first and original Lone Star state. Won Independence from Mexico before Texas I gather.

Yes but his map has it going almost all the way to San Antonio.

Also he has "Greater Appalachia" extending into what looks like Wichita Kansas, I can tell you, Wichita is pretty dang flat.

This one is a LOT more accurate.

It sure is, but for one thing...

Why is Alaska white? I know it snows there a lot, but..

I second that!

I’m in Texas and love it!

(Ne mo impune lacessit (Latin slogan used by the Scots; roughly translates to “Impugn me if you dare”) this also corresponds to “don’t mess with me” & “ don’t mess with Texas “ :D

Texas. Just Texas. Or the Republic of Texas, if you like. Everywhere else is just not Texas.

Yep.

If this is your Texas...

Or this is your Texas...

There ain't no place like Texas!

The clashes between the 11 nations play out in every way, from politics to social values. Woodard notes that states with the highest rates of violent deaths are in the Deep South, Tidewater and Greater Appalachia, regions that value independence and self-sufficiency.

So a WaPo staff blogger has concluded that independence and self-suffiency are deadly. Gee, what a surprise.

I swear, liberals are as predictable as clockwork.

If they really wanted to get to the underlying truth of things they would include race as a factor. But of course that would upset their apple cart and lead to inconvenient conclusions.
