At some point in our lives, each of us has said to ourselves, Wow I really wish I didnt have to work. Shortly after making that statement, we snap back into reality and understand we should be productive members of society. This typically includes being employed. Because of this basic economic fact, I found it alarming that more than 1/3 of the work force just doesnt want a job. The Wall Street Journal has the numbers:
34.3%: Share of Americans over age 16 who say they dont want a job, up from about 30% two decades ago. Americans arent just leaving the labor force those who have left it are drifting further away.
Being unemployed is a major problem. Not wanting to be employed is an even bigger one.
In a new paper, economists Regis Barnichon and Andrew Figura divide up those out of the labor force using a simpler standard: whether or not the person says they want a job. And they uncover an interesting previously unnoticed trend: As a share of all those not in the labor force, the number of people who want a job has been generally declining since the early 1980s.
You have that right, it pisses me off that i have to pay the taxes for the bitch to live like that!!
Don't forget the new dynamic, the federal printing press.
All the talk about "preventing the worse recession since the great depression"...is nothing but a load of horsesh#t.
Gov. truckloads of fiat currency and fake credit cards are the only thing that prevented(and still prevents)what SHOULD be an economic disaster from the fallout of(unabated)Wall Street casino gambling shenanigans, along with unfunded liabilities stemming from entitlements and other fraudulent deeds.
...entitlements, a bunch of promises(deliberately)made with no possible way of(realistically)paying for them...created by a bunch of shyster politicians who would make the most dishonest used car salesmen blush.
The whole scenario is playing out like a movie.
The bow of the Titanic broke off and sank...
...words of encouragement spew from our "honest friends" in government/media who assure us that...
..."TRUST US, ALL IS WELL NOW!"...(as we are serenaded by the musicians on the deck playing pleasantries).
Make no mistake, for those on the stern who think the worst is over and breathing a sigh of relief...
...the other half is still filling up with water.
Those in-the-know are grabbing the good-life while they can, some checking off their bucket-lists, others are quietly securing the limited lifeboats aboard.
...all the while, the serfs are kept in the dark, being reassured and entertained.
Hmmm. Interesting.
She didn't get those rug rats by just sitting on it.
We own a few apartment units. Every time I break down and let a section 8 tenant in because of some sob story, she starts competing with the regional sperm bank before the first month is over.
If they did it quietly, that would be OK, but every one of them has had all night parties with drugs, booze, lots of sex, and loud music. They drive out the tenants with jobs who have to get up in the morning and go to work.
“working unless you make very good money is proving to not be worth it....you make the effort to get up, dressed, drive to work, work hard all day, drive home, crash...for that you get high taxes on your income, your property, sales tax and tax on your fuel and registrations for your car and any and all vehicles, boats, trailors, motorcycles that you happen to afford...and then you get forced into insurance programs...”
Good points; I think the reason people don’t want to work anymore is because for an increasing number of workers in jobs that used to be “good jobs”, there are no more boats, trailers, motorcycles, etc.. If the government (with the collaboration of both parties) is going to keep importing not just landscapers but also programmers, accountants, doctors, and engineers (to suppress wages), then any Americans investing in an education in those fields is a fool.
The Dems have done a much better job in channeling workers’ angst over this economy (not that they have a working solution, but they’ve at least convinced enough voters they care). I expect minimum wage increases to succeed on ballots going forward (it just did here in NJ) because many Americans now suspect that minimum wage is all they’ll ever be earning in a few years (as real salaries continue to drop) and they aren’t blind to the unreported inflation that makes the “new” minimum wage of $8.25 simply equal to the previous minimum wage of $7.25 in terms of buying power.
“We own a few apartment units. Every time I break down and let a section 8 tenant in because of some sob story, she starts competing with the regional sperm bank before the first month is over.”
I have family that owns rental units, and they won’t cave on section 8 because of such horror stories (he still has prospective productive tenants, and understands they’ll flee if any of the four units goes to welfare folk). When the law so strongly supports tenants, and makes evicition so difficult for section 8ers, it really is risking getting into that market.Landlords make a deal with the Devil when they accept them; they’ll get their gubmint rent checks on time, but the property (and neighborhood) are trashed.
Landlords lose their political independence when they start taking gubmint money in the section 8 program; when Caesar pays the rent they must support the party that will keep the payments coming...
When you make being shiftless and irresponsible a vacation, what do you expect those who are still learning about life to pursue?
All the men who have vanished, the men you hated, yet dreaded to lose, it is I who have taken them away from you. Do not attempt to find us. We do not choose to be found. Do not cry that it is our duty to serve you. We do not recognize such duty. Do not cry that you need us. We do not consider need a claim. Do not cry that you own us. You dont. Do not beg us to return. We are on strike, we, the men of the mind.”
We have granted you everything you demanded of us, we who had always been the givers, but have only now understood it. We have no demands to present to you, no terms to bargain about, no compromise to reach. You have nothing to offer us. We do not need you.”
Look on the bright side, though. One day, the producers will be able to say this to all these looters.

Am I the only one who is surprised that it has changed so little?
Count me among them.
Ayn Rand was born in Russia. She saw it firsthand.
I agree 100%. It’s a marginal existence with no freedom and no hope. I would not want it.
Ping. Over 50% in my area probably.
Sure it was. It just took the ‘working class’ this long to figure that out.
Well, they don’t have to work to eat. Some people just need more motivation than others.
Right. They’re not stupid. They look around and see all the free money. So should I go out in the cold, have someone hold me to a standard and run the risk of being fired for low performance or should I just stay home, watch cable, have sex and nurse my broken soul with drugs/booze?
