Back in 1992 a Lt. Col. (USAF I think) wrote about the future that many back then envisioned.. a hollowed out military is sent off to the Middle East after years of neglect by U.S. administrations. Disaster resulted and the military finally! acted in 2012. OK. I'll accept 2014.. I've been waiting since 1972. Back then..

Don’t drink too much of the Kool Aid on this stuff. Those Mullahs are plenty smart. They know if they nuke Israel or anybody else they will get turned into a skating rink.

What Iran is really about (they’ve said it multiple times in public, especially Ahmadinejad at the UN) is not Kool-Aid stuff; the only people that call it that are liberals. The Iranian Mullahs are genuinely apocalyptic in outlook and actually don’t care about being wiped out because they really do think their Mahdi is coming.
I’ve often wondered how often the 99 mullahs are actually in-country, or somewhere on a French Isle or castle.
We have a prof at the local college that is (wait for it) very smart and a conservative. He told me once that these leaders are just playing to the home crowd. It's a racket with all politicians world wide. Make a boogie man and then rescue your followers from them. Just like H.L. Mencken said.
And FUAllah is still our slogan.
