Jason Collins, Openly Gay and Still Unsigned, Waits and Wonders
NY Times.com ^ | 10/10/2013 | HARVEY ARATON

Posted on 10/10/2013 7:04:28 PM PDT by mykroar

LOS ANGELES — Since making the announcement last spring that he is a gay professional basketball player, Jason Collins has been widely praised, received much support and made many new friends. But with training camp for a new season under way, he has been waiting for a call from an N.B.A. team. Any N.B.A. team.

When Collins, 34, a 7-foot center, wrote his coming-out cover story for Sports Illustrated — “my declaration,” he said — he proudly spoke of having been called a pro’s pro for his team-first, lunch-pail style. Never a star, he has nonetheless had a career spanning 12 years and 6 teams after four years at Stanford, where he played with his twin, Jarron.

“That’s how I still consider myself,” he said Wednesday in his first interview since N.B.A. training camps opened last month without his participation. “Sure, I’ve picked up another title. But I feel that’s always who I’m going to be — that person who sets a good example, who represents the sport and is an asset to my team and a role model for other players.”

The question Collins has to ponder is why he has not been signed as a free agent. Is it because he is at best a marginal player with modest career statistics (3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds a game) nearing the end of his career, one who would cost more than a younger player based on the league’s collectively bargained pay scale? Or is there something more sinister at work related to the new role he would play?

Collins did not dismiss the latter notion or address it.

Collins did not dismiss the latter notion or address it.

And then the article continues on ad nauseam doing exactly that.

“Or is there something more sinister at work”

Yes, those 2000 year old apprehensions of indecency are so sinister. I can imagine a James Bond movie where 007 faces off against the homophobic NBA officials who won’t sign this poor guy.

Or play "horse" with Magic Johnson.

May favorite part of the Slimes article.

“Another advocate for gay athletes, Hudson Taylor, the executive director of Athlete Ally, wrote in an e-mail: “The decision to sign him rests with individual team owners. One of them has to step up.”

Now somebody HAS to sign crappy players just to indulge delusions that sodomy doesn’t rub most people the wrong way. This entire agenda seems to be predicated upon erecting a fantasy land.

It sounds like the “openly gay” NBA lifestyle isn’t working out for Joyce. “In Your Face” bull**** does tend to grate on normal people’s nerves.

Jason Collins is a fourth-rate, bench-warming, garbage-time mop-up scrub.

That’s why he’s without a team.

Having seen him play last season, I can safely say that he is unsigned because he is indescribably bad at the game of basketball. "Useless" doesn't quite do his game justice.

Amazing that all but a couple of the commenters saw through the PC hype... even in the New York Times... and called him what he was: a mediocre-at-his-best center who was way, way, way past his prime. “Two baskets a game for someone who stands under the basket?”

“Jason Collins is a fourth-rate, bench-warming, garbage-time mop-up scrub.”
Seems like the first time anyone ever heard of this ‘tard was when he told his long term female fiancé that he was gay. About the time he started seeking a new contract to play basketball.
He’s a never was wanna be that is looking for “cough” fame.
Sucks to be his fiancé.

Poor quality player that only came out in hopes some team would pick him up for the gayfirmative action.

Sorry Jason, the NBA still counts play quality over political points.

Sounds like the trendy summer of steamy man love attention whoring has ended for Jason Collins.

Now he gets to enjoy life out of the closet, even of he was never in the closet to begin with.

34-year-olds with poor skills, who never were very good, don’t get signed much. If he thought his “Look at me! I’m gay!” ploy would get him a contract, in spite of his diminishing meager skills—well, it isn’t working.

He just needs to find a “gayer team” that needs a mediocre to poor player that can build a large queer following for the team. Shouldn’t be too hard ... maybe something in SF, NYC or another queer friendly city that could possibly mandate the formation of a rainbow franchise.

There is nothing sinister about NBA teams not wanting to deal with the media circus that would ensue should a team sign him to a contract.

Not the Warriors, please. The Golden State Warriors are actually good this year. They have no use for an aging career third string center.

He was going to try out for football and couln’t really kick that well so the ONLY thing left was Tight End and he didn’t make it because his wasn’t.

Reminds me of the old ‘Tank McNamara’(?) cartoon strip that had a Black Basketball player who was mediocre at best, who white washed himself because he figured that he ‘stunk’ as a Black player, he would be pretty decent as a White player.

He wasn’t going to be signed by anyone before his little stunt. Nobody outside of his immediate family and the local bath house even knew the dude’s name.

Now I guess he’ll cry discrimination and sue the NBA.

Don’t you know that announcing what you do in bed with the same gender instantly gives you a halo and makes you outstanding at all you do. Magical thinking dominates Leftist thinking. Just ask today’s media workers of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists’ Association.

The headline should actually read

Jason Collins, Aging mediocre with fading skills and Still Unsigned, Waits and Wonders

Seeing that nobody would question why he is unsigned. It has nothing to do with his sexual orientation and everything to do with being a immobile aging player with skills well below those of every other player in the league.
