The shutdown fearmongering continues apace, and Time magazine is dutifully passing along the administration's talking points. Here's the latest: the government work stoppage could drive cash-starved spies into the arms of other countries. It would make otherwise patriotic Americans become traitors.

An ongoing government shutdown heightens the risk that American intelligence officers could be flipped as double agents, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Wednesday.

If having your pay delayed a couple of weeks drives a spy into the arms of our enemies, they should never have been recruited to spy anyway.

This is why a detailed examination of your finances is part of any security clearance.

If missing a paycheck is going to send you scurrying off to Vlad Putin to make your car payment for you, you really ought not be in that position in the first place.

So we should get these disloyal federal employees back spying on us to keep them quiet?

Any person who would spy for that reason is probably already a spy.

Real Americans cannot be bought.

No, he’s saying we keep paying them to spy on us because they can’t be trusted.

Exactly. But liberals have no concept of people having any morals. Remember when Obama claimed that Doctors ran around taking out tonsils and amputating legs just to get paid more money?

“...The shutdown will cause the icecaps to melt too....”

That’s cause the shutdown is affecting the sun, too... it’s shining a little brighter and hotter, causing even MORE cute fuzzy little 1200 pound polar bears to get stranded on ice floes and possibly drown... ‘cause the shutdown made them forget how to like...swim... and stuff...

Honest... Jay Carney said so...

An ongoing government shutdown heightens the risk that American intelligence officers could be flipped as double agents, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Wednesday.

Clapper was out drinking the other night with his friend Bob The Spy and they both got pretty trashed, and then Clapper said, "I'm telling ya, Bob, they're all dumber than a box of rocks. Here, lemme showya..." and he took out his triple-encrypted Blackberry and woke up the Time magazine editor and started shouting, "our spies'll turncoat on us dammit, without official payoff money we're all doomed!" Bob The Spy led him out the door of the bar while Clapper was laughing hysterically...

Well, then, shut down all the illegal domestic surveillance and use the money to pay the people doing lawful intel against enemy regimes. Duh.

the nat'l intelligence director is saying they can't "guarantee the nation’s safety ..."

Yeah, maybe the shutdown will cause them to miss a specific warning about a dangerous terrorist in the country... oh, wait, never mind -- that already happened when the government was up and running.

Who ever wrote this must think very little of honorable and honest American intelligence agents. Kinda tells a lot about the author for Time.
