125 shopping days left: Retailers start Xmas deals

Even before the school bells are ringing for many families, retailers are sounding sleigh bells.

Yes, that's right. With 120-plus shopping days left, stores are already talking up their holiday offers.

Toys R Us announced Wednesday that it would expand its price-match guarantee to include online retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com and BestBuy.com, among others. The aim, according to the release, "Removing any doubt before holiday shopping begins in earnest that customers are receiving the best available prices."

Also on Wednesday, Walmart announced it will drop the $5 fee it charged shoppers in previous years to open a layaway account. Shoppers can begin putting eligible items on layaway for the holidays on Sept. 13, with the retailer's Facebook fans gaining access two days earlier.

"All year long, but especially during the holidays, our customers need a low price leader," said the retail giant's chief merchandising and marketing officer Duncan Mac Naughton in a statement. "This year, we are committed to doing everything we did last year to help Americans save money—plus more. More savings, more layaway items and our commitment that they can give their families a great Christmas on a budget."

customers are receiving the best available prices."

Lower prices and increased saving are good things. They help raise the standard of living for the average wage earner, and help increase production which leads to economic progress and greater prosperity for the economy as a whole.

The more they push this secularist Xmas crap down my family’s throat, the less stuff we buy instead retreating back to the real ‘reason for the CHRISTmas season’.

It also takes away from Halloween - which no one should “celebrate.”

I won’t be spending any money on Christmas this year.

Sorry, retailers, my Christmas shopping is done. I made homemade gifts from free stuff and leftovers from other projects. I also went overboard on jelly making last weekend so Christmas has only cost me a few cups of sugar.

Haven’t these retailers heard the good news? “Recovery Summer 5.0” has been a huge success and it’s all coming up roses! Thank you Dear Leader!

The past two years I’ve been asking for our two old Windows XPs to be fixed. Birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, or just because. Ain’t gonna happen unless I take them in myself. Hubby cries every day he can’t play his flight games on his new puter. Oh, well. Maybe I’ll gift them to myself and not give him the password.

I keep joking that they will put up and take down the Christmas decorations BEFORE Christmas some year.

They already have Halloween candy out at the local stores, I wonder if they will keep it out there for the next 2 MONTHS or if they remove it for Christmas decorations?

The X is from the Greek name for Christ. Quite respectful and proper. A centuries-old usage.

Yeah, I know all that. My point, which admittedly I didn't elaborate, is that we seem to be using "X-mas" more and more these days...why? Having a very dim view of my fellow so-called Americans, I believe it's because people either don't want to say, or are afraid to say CHRISTmas. They don't want to offend the tender sensitivities of the minority of people in this country that don't celebrate CHRISTmas. It's the same reason retailers/the media/sheeple are saying "happy holidays" more these days instead of "Merry Christmas".

Christmas has only cost me a few cups of sugar.

There are so many options for thoughtful gifting- in my world something handmade carries much more weight than something bought. I work on things all year long so I don’t help the merchants that push storebought junk much.

I don’t hear people SAY “xmas”, but we type it. 4 less characters means 5 less chances for typos.

Retailers say “happy holidays” because they have a wide variety of customers, and it is after all the holiday season with a minimum of 3 holidays in 6 weeks regardless of your religion.

Sam's Club already has some of their Christmas decorations out; I saw the stuff earlier this week. Makes me want to stay away from the place.
