Why don't whites have black friends?

White people are products of their own whitewashed, sanitized environment. Black people have been systematically excluded from white neighborhoods. Black stories rarely surface in popular culture. The history of race in high school textbooks has been boiled down to a handful of bedtime stories about Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks. Try to tap into the average white person's feelings on race and you won't necessarily find feelings of hate and antipathy. You just won't find much of anything, no fully formed or well-considered thoughts about race of any kind. There's nothing really there. Even white people who want black friends don't know where to start.

Good point. This hate-monkey is mostly on the back of indigenous US black. I worked in Mogadishu for a brief assignment a couple years ago. While there I supervised a staff of local Somalis. Great bunch of guys. They were humble, courteous, and had a fine work ethic. They responded rightly to respect. This was largely true for the African Union Army soldiers I encountered as well. (I did, however, have to contend with an entitlement attitude from the sorry-a$$, bankrupt government types who were content to let the UN do their work.)

I constantly have to remind myself...I feel myself assuming prejudiced against me all the time...I find myself scared sometimes to say things outright..what I found is that when I say it the way I want, I am respected... I NEVER use the term African American— NUHUH! no way!

If anyone tries to correct me(which is very rare), I laugh- and say that I have honestly never met anyone born in Africa. I think most black folks I know feel like you are being fake when you say African American, they know you are uncomfortable...

I ask things like, “What is it with black folks smoking Newports? Never see ya’ll smoking Marlboro.” I let them know I smoke Newport lights, cause that other stuff tastes like cardboard..they laugh and agree!

We need to let go of the BS we are fed- on both sides- white and black, that the “other” is the problem, racist, etc....

It starts with each of us- one white hand and black hand joined together at a time...

and thank you for your response, I half expected folks to blast me- LOL!

people/kids don’t give a crap about skin color until they are taught by someone to do so.

That is so kind of you to say...I am a flawed person! But I sincerely work everyday at putting service to others as my goal...sometimes that service is only to my family, other days I get to serve strangers...

I made a lot of horrible choices in my life. But I was stretched and grown threw those times...I do a workshop at the shelter- Called Victim or Victory: Your Choice....it is a workshop that I created years back....

The folks really enjoy it...I often get standing ovations at the end, lots of them stand in line to talk and share...some even keep in touch...some are even willing to come back to share their stories with others on how they overcame their struggles...

All glory goes to GOD...He gave me this workshop.. I often wondered why me? why not someone with a bigger microphone...then one day I had only one person in the workshop....I cried the whole way home...I know why He gave it to me...because even if there is only one person to share it with- I will show up and share it...

A few weeks back, we had a former Muslim man, now an fullfledged Christian Evangelist speak at our church...he said he know his faith is growing if he can do three simple things..

1) Do things you have never done before
2) Go places you have never gone before
3) Share your story...

I wept...I do this every week....yes— I was homeless myself at one time...

But I am still very flawed! It is a journey...

Exactly— I just smack that crapt down without a blink of an eye...it is a lie they need to cling to in order to maintain power...

“try being the only white person at an all-black get-together with a black friend and see how he treats you when he gets around other blacks.

Been there...done that 40 years ago.”

I’ve been there too, and no awkward moments either. I was the only white face among 40 or 50 people. We had a good time.

I see more problems arising from class differences, not racial differences. However, class and race often do follow the same track.
