As of Tuesday, the Earth's ecological budget for the year has maxed out. For the rest of the year the planet will operate on an ecological deficit. And it's only August.
So claims the Global Footprint Network, which calls today "Earth Overshoot Day," its annual estimate of when human consumption exceeds the planet's ability to regenerate its resources for the year.
"It's a bit of a gimmick, I admit," said the group's president Mathis Wankernagel,in a phone interview from Switzerland.
"It's not that tomorrow I won't be able to eat potatoes anymore."
But, he said, it's meant to make a point: Humanity is using resources faster than the Earth can replace them. According to the group's analysis, it would currently take one and a half Earths to renew the resources humanity consumes.

This guy is a master of understatement, isn't he?
The last I heard, humans are replacing carbon in the atmosphere even faster than we can remove it in the form of wood, food, and fuel. At least, that's what the "global warming" alarmists would have us believe.
As a conservative, I am, by definition, a conservationist. Plus, my religion teches that we are to be stewards of the Earth and the resources provided therein, by Our Heavenly Father
As a logical person but also by virtue of an undergrad in science, I demand a factual accout of anything prior to my taking stck in it ( gov Christie is not right re his ruling this wk, to put it in mild terms, nor are global warming ‘belivers’ and anyone who wants to treat science as a religion and say they believe something as if it’s a matter of faith).
But I have always taken a personal view toward ecology as logical and reasonable- that is to conserve, not waste, take care of property and all that would be reasonable for a civilized person
So, I just gotta say, with the largest most central Mideast country in such turmoil that Mass was not said today for the first time in 1,600 years (sixteen hundred), and Obamacare about to take out our entire medical and economic systems, to name the two most salient features of this BO world we’re trying to hold together
does CBS really think anyone in their right minds gives a flying frog about this crap?
Where’s the huge manatee? I wanna see the huge manatee! Also this year has been the best ever for my garden, and I’m not going to share my potatoes with this guy even if he doesn’t have any tomorrow.
I put this in the category of, we’re doomed so can we please enjoy what little time we have left?
Wheres the huge manatee? I wanna see the huge manatee! Also this year has been the best ever for my garden, and Im not going to share my potatoes with this guy even if he doesnt have any tomorrow.
I am sorry the Huge Manatee read this story and laughed itself unconscious, It will be a while before it recovers.
So claims the Global Footprint Network, which calls today "Earth Overshoot Day,"
Huge manitee is unconscious? Oh the huge manitee! That’s right, huge manitee just got meta.
And I've added several all natural, organic elements to make it have a tiny carbon foot print, if at all.
So, there are poisons that are all natural, no? Didn't Socrates drink poison hemlock? Well, the members of the Global Footprint Network need to go pick some and prepare a huge batch.
Then they could replace all their clothing with natural hemp robes. Kinda itchy, but tres chic Earth friendly.
Now they should all meet up in Northern California in the Redwood National Park...
Kind of like this, but wearing hemp robes...
And sit down, and drink the hemlock!
What's not to like?
They would immediately reduce, no ILIMINATE! their part of the overuse of natural Earth resources!
They would feed and fertilize proud, mystic, majestic, spirit-brother trees!
The purchase of hemp robes would finance would-be marijuana, er, hemp farmers and help them legitimize the production of a plant that, while you can't get a buzz from, looks a lot like those that you can (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). I mean come on, George Washington grew it!
I hope they don't forget to invite Algore.
These people need to stop taking drugs.
Weren’t “they” predicting in the ‘70s that the earth couldn’t possibly sustain the population we exceeded sometime in the ‘90s?
Science is not their friend.
Indeed, it is why they are only journalists.
Wankernagel. That figures.
Well Mr. Wankernagel, you want to do your part to help?
Kindly stop eating, driving, using electricity, and while you are at it you can stop breathing too.
I will begin to consider the environment once Algore & co. once live like they preach.
I think Mr. Wanker is pulling your “crank”er.
Perhaps he should run for the mayorship of New York City and change his name to “Weiner”. Sounds better than “Wanker”.
Ed Schulze and Chris Matthews are “wankers”.
