I was wondering, if they were looking or a suspect, could they turn on the mic’s of every phone in a mile radius and then run the information through a supercomputer to match a suspects known voice pattern? That would be pretty amazing, in a Matrix/1984/Brave New World/The Net kind of way.
Using NSA logic, record everything all the time, just in case they are looking for a terrorist or something.

Like they’ve basically admitted, there is no technical barrier to them following you online, on phone, by mail, or anywhere. It’s all ‘legal’. It was legal for the Stasi to do whatever, so at this point since they’ve gone through the cost and time to build up the system it will be used.
The only thing keeping them in check is the political whims of the law. As we know, they’ll lie about anything and force your ISP or google or anyone to lie to their customers as well under duress. That sounds, to me, like a form of terrorism. ‘Are you an agent?’ ‘What’s your name?’
I watched the German movie The Lives of Others on youtube, it’s very depressing and it’s basically what’s going on now here.
If they submit already obtained (illegally) evidence for issuance of a warrant, they have committed a crime.
What I’m saying is that they can’t do this without a warrant with YOUR particular name on it (not that FISA blanket data archiving crap). Secondly, if they use all the phone itself to gather/record data without that warrant in order to GET a warrant, they are committing a crime.
It has nothing to do with Clinton or parsting. They are only supposedly allowed to gather the ‘metadata’ associated with all phone traffic, not specific conversations, per what the NSA and other intels have told us they have been approved for by FISA. Yes, you and I know they illegally are also recording the non-metadata and turning on phones that are off, etc. This is patently illegal without a specific warrant. ILLEGAL...if they lie about it, then it is a very serious broach of our freedom and the perpetrators belong in prison.
And you’re trusting people like clapper, who got up and lied and perjured himself over it, to not plant the ‘evidence’ and cover their tracks? You really think they’ll behave because something is ‘illegal’ for them to do?

Indeed. I got an HTC One and can’t take it out. Bad enough that it means the phone has a built-in lifespan of less than 2 practical years until it starts to wear out, but also because of crap like this. Not that I’d probably bother to pull my battery out anyway.
I’m going to guess they aren’t collecting all phones constantly to transcribe (yet) because of bandwidth. But sooner or later they certainly will. Either transmit it real time or have a Trojan in it doing it for them and sending just the text and your gps location/billing info.

Sure. You can still get one with just a dial pad, but it’ll still have the firmware needed to activate the mic if they want. Who knows if those older ones did. The analog ones from the 90s you could pick up on any modded scanner radio just fine. They made that a BIG crime once someone overheard a congress critter doing some shady stuff.
I’m sure once they went digital though they have always had backdoors.

Back in the day, Jedgar & Co. were perfectly capable of turning those into room bugs that worked with the phone on or off the hook. Required a bag job, however, for on-hook listening to work.
I've seen a demo of this...they turned on the mic of a couple having dinner and listened to the conversation. The couple knew this was happening (volunteered) but they can do it to anyone.
