Ex-RNC Chair Michael Steele: I Don’t Understand The Fear Of Gun Registration
tpm ^ | 4/9/2013 | DAVID TAINTOR

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele on Tuesday said he doesn't understand why gun owners fear the registration of their firearms.

"I don't get the fear of registration," Steele said on MSNBC. "I don't get the, the concern about trafficking. Are we saying that we want criminals to, you know, make … back-alley sales out of the trunks of their cars?"

Steele was part of a panel on MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown," during which former Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) said that responsible gun owners insure their guns, which means they're registered. "I mean, I don't understand," she said.

MSNBC host Chuck Todd agreed with Steele. "It feels like we're protecting the rights of the paranoid about government, rather than, sort of, the reasonable," he said.

As TPM has reported, the National Rifle Association has long warned that expanding background checks would lead to a national gun registry.

Dear Mr. Steele,

Please explain the "purpose" of gun registration.

Please explain how registering guns prevents people with the intent of committing harm to do so?

Please illustrate one law where citizens never circumvent for personal expediency?

Please explain why this law makes you feel sooooooo good?

Please explain the study done by Northwestern University School of Law showing . . .

"400,000 people a year use guns in situations where the defenders claim that they "almost certainly" saved a life " has no meaning to shallow narrow minded people such as you!

Every gun registration in history has led to confiscation.

What is it. Why do Republicans, when “learning” from yet another election wipe-out, decide to get more liberal?

Who is it, in the GOP who decided this?

Hello? It is exactly the incorrect lesson from the last 3 or four elections.

Don’t act like liberals. Present a true choice to voters.

Liberals. Vs: CONSERVATIVES

Another "I don't understand" from the GOPe! Why am I not surprised...

Have Americans ever been so poorly served and represented than we are now by our one and a half party political system and our one stream media?

He should really read Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion

The first gun registration laws in the country were to register the firearms of free slaves to prevent them from rebelling and attempting to free other slaves.

In Florida for example, they allowed freed slaves to carry guns in 1828* if they had a license from a Justice of the Peace. In 1831** they repealed that law and in 1833***, they used the registration records to authorize patrols to enter homes of freed slaves and confiscate any guns as well as 'disperse punishment as they saw fit'.

* Act of Nov. 17, 1828 Sec. 9, 1828 Fla. Laws 174, 177; Act of Jan. 12, 1828, Sec. 9, 1827 Fla. Laws 97, 100

** Act of Jan. 1831, 1831 Fla. Laws 30

*** Act of Feb. 17, 1833, ch. 671, Sec. 15, 17, 1833 Fla. Laws 26, 29

You don’t get it you cannot think.

It is a non-constitutional invasion of privacy and exercise of rights.

Let’s ask for registrations for all viewers of violent pornography or video games that use guns, like Adam Lanza!

See how they will squeal.

I want no lists of free citizens in the hands of the government in order to take rights away.

“Can someone explain why this is better than what Dems do? Or “different”?”

Norm,
The news I've been reading on this forum this week has brought me to the point I want to lock my front door and never go out again. N. Korea, new virus in China, gun grabbers Dems and Reps, just read Maryland governor is starting to tax people for the amount of rain that falls on their land, the country of New York is totally crazy taking a man's guns because he once took some pills, a woman with an unloaded gun trying to fly out of New York state, is arrested and charged with a felony.

I've just had it - my house is the only sane place in the country so I'll lock myself in with my Yorkie who is not crazy, and enjoy the remainder of my days not knowing what the crazy country turning into communism is doing.

You are not crazy so if you come visit, I'll open the door.

Registration is the last step before confiscation. Look at what is happening in New York right now.

What a RINO butthead!!!!! I bet he thinks the second amendment is about hunting and should be held against what he thinks everyone needs too.

Anti constitution moron butthead.

None of the rights granted to us by the constitution have a “needs” test so I don't give a damn what someone thinks I need. The second amendment is not about hunting it is all about protecting our country from people who would destroy our constitution just like these anti second amendment folks are trying to do. They are very much the enemy of our nation.

We are NOT screwed!

When John Paul Jones’ ship was shot all to h*** by the enemy, did he say “we are so screwed”? No! He said, “I have not yet begun to fight!”

Right now there are slave states & free states (reverse of the original meaning) but this battle is just beginning and the social media revolution will prove far more dangerous to the gungrabbers than any assortment of guns.

I saw the stuff happen in 1968. THEN it would have been correct to observe that politics & the culture were arrayed against gun owners. Not any more.

Regards from the free state of South Carolina!

So you don’t understand it. I don’t understand how we send a satellite out into space and slingshot around planet A and fling itself towards planet B, then loop-the-loop towards planet C.

You don’t have a right to understand it.

We have a right to own firearms.

That is all.
