Chairman of Joint Chiefs: Military recruiting women as qualified ‘military-age men’ dwindle

In a report by NPR’s Tom Bowman aired during Monday’s broadcast of “All Things Considered,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey explained why the military is having difficulty recruiting qualified young men.

“I think it’s fairly common knowledge that our population of military-age young men who qualify for the military is declining,” Dempsey told NPR. “And so, as a very practical matter, we decided if in 2020 we’re going to need these young ladies and we’re going to need to attract as much diversity and as much talent as we can possibly attract, if that’s going to be the case, what are we waiting for?”

Dempsey suggested that the military has focused too much on tough physical standards in recruiting.

“There are existing standards — many of which haven’t been dusted off in a very long time, many of which have been kind of narrowly focused just on physical standards, but without the companion piece of psychologically and intellectual standards,” Dempsey said.

Bowman pointed out that legal problems, lack of education, drug addiction and health problems are among the reasons many young males are unable to join the military.

The militaries that have maintained conscription are doing just fine: South Korea, Germany, Finland, Israel & Switzerland come to mind.

Not to many women I know that hunt, camp and clean their own kill would do well in a long hump into an area.

my son isn't joining the Marines or Navy like most of his male relatives did. I told him from 6th grade on that the Marines aren't like daddy's or grandpa's Marines. So just to hammer it home I told him how they're prosecuting warriors and the coup de grace was this

Remember what the Russians did to German women. Dempsey is an example of the generation of political generals that Obama has pumped into the highest ranks. It’s like Clinton and Carter with the hacks they made JCS Chairmen, like William Owen and David Jones.

Didn’t they say that allowing gays to serve openly wouldn’t have any effect on recruitment? If I’m reading this article correctly, this seems to be circumstantial evidence that it has had an effect.

I meant that Russia has long standing problems with its conscription and are now attempting to go over to a professional force on the Western, specifically US, model.
