Rand Paul: Pathway To Citizenship Is Needed, E-Verify Is Not

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) gave a full-throated endorsement on Tuesday for comprehensive immigration reform that would allow undocumented immigrants to become citizens but not expand the employment verification system, putting him at odds with members of his party.

But Paul differs from many Republicans, and some Democrats, on employment verification. Paul singled out E-Verify, an already-existing federal effort to check employment status. It's considered necessary by many to ensure businesses aren't hiring workers they shouldn't, but it's also criticized as cumbersome for employers and too likely to give false positives that would keep citizens and legal immigrant workers from being hired.

"My plan will not, though -- and this is where I disagree with some in the bipartisan group -- impose a national ID card," he said. "It will also not have mandatory E-Verify. I don't mind if there's E-Verify, maybe related to the tax code somehow, but I don't like the idea of making every business owner a policeman."

I fully expect a bi-partisan bill to be passed in the next 12 mos basically letting all of them stay and putting most on a path to citizenship even though they will probably not take advantage of it.

And both parties will claim thy tried to stop the parts you don't like.

My Ukrainian immigrant Grandparents came here looking to be US Citizens. There was no welfare available to them and yet they still managed.

I’m saying that paying taxes to the USA does not qualify one to vote.

“No taxation without representation” is not in the Constitution. That is a slogan from the Revolutionary times regarding the colonists paying taxes as subjects of the British crown and not receiving representation in that government.

So, we’re talking about citizens not receiving representation, not foreigners.

As a matter of fact.. there are already nine different special visa programs. Like the J Visa, which is for entertainers and athletes to play and perform in the US.

We do not need any Guest Worker visa....f they cannot be covered under existing visas..we do not need them.

Amnesty is what everyone else will pass after ignoring Rand because people like you would rather sit around grousing about crap he isn’t proposing.

By your conclusion ... amnesty has already been granted because they are here, successfully under the radar, and going no where. They already have amnesty. You and I would both like to put an end to it.

I don't know that Paul's solution is the correct one yet ... I have more research to do. But I do know that placing the illegals under the purview of work visas brings them out from under the radar. The become exposed. The undesirables can be weeded out and the desirables would start to pay taxes.

We already have a work visa program in this country -- and no one is espousing that the work visa program already in place provides "amnesty". So when Rand Paul suggest we ought to use this program already in place to leverage the situation to our advantage, it does not sound like "amnesty" to me. In fact, I do not know that is such a bad idea.

I favor deportation across the board; I don't trust the Republicans do this whatsoever. Paul's suggestion is the only other reasonable approach I've heard. And I do trust Rand Paul to implement it. His solution may not be perfect, but as I dig in ... it doesn't sound bad.

And, the alternative is to let the Republicans talk a big game and accomplish nothing but kick the can down the road another election cycle. I'm going to hear Paul out.

Debate over immigration plan could come down to definition of “amnesty”

Deportation is one of the penalties for being caught in this country illegally, though the ongoing presence of 11 million people is testament to how rarely that’s applied. Enforcement in recent years has focused on those who commit crimes once they’re here.

Jenks asserted that “path to citizenship” is a far more misleading euphemism, at least when it comes to the Senate blueprint. Under that proposal, illegal immigrants would gain “probationary status” that shields them from deportation as soon as they register and — another artful phrase — “come out of the shadows.”

“Amnesty occurs on Day 1,” Jenks said. “The other side has tried to argue that it’s not amnesty unless you hand out a naturalization certificate on Day 1.”

Of course Paul is proposing amnesty. Extremely disappointing. No matter what he promises to the illegals and other criminals, those elements will be voting for the Dems.

I never said it was in the Constitution.

Neither did I say that paying taxes qualifies one to vote.

What I will say is that the principal of "No taxation without representation" is a just principal.

I will also say that it would be an unjust and unsustainable position to have permanent residents who can claim rightful residence to stay in a place while being subject to it's laws, rules and regulations which they have NO power to affect.

We need to pick a just position and stick with it.

Either the only path to permanent residence is through lawful immigration where the immigrant is granted full rights or we need to grant full amnesty. There can be no half-measure.

Any proposal of the sort is a trick.

We tried the 3/5 of a citizen thing before and it didn't work.

Indeed, and I’m real tired of those on the left and HERE twisting simple words like AMNESTY to mean whatever their chosen candidate would like it to mean! Kind of like ILLEGAL ALIEN does NOT translate to VISITOR!
