“Singh and colleagues spent five years putting the pieces together.”

Really? It would take me five minutes. Eating and drinking crap is bad for you. Duh. But so what.

“The study adds to mounting evidence that sugar-sweetened beverages, loaded with calories that carry little nutritional value, are a public health hazard.” Ah...a PUBLIC health hazard. I see where this is going.

“I think our findings should really impel policymakers to make effective policies to reduce sugary beverage consumption since it causes a significant number of deaths,” This is a very political sounding ‘doctor’.

I have it from a good source that ANYONE that drank Whole Vitamin D milk during the War of 1812 died.

Also, this past St Patricks day (AS on every Amateur Night) the reports are rampant that 40%(pick a #) of traffic deaths are alcohol involved.
By all means, YES do something about that.
BUT
Wouldn’t your time be better spent (safely) to eradicate the cause of the other 60% also?

In a study that's sure to shake up the soda ban debate

It shouldn't "shake up the debate", as the debate isn't about sugar, whether it's good, bad or neutral. The debate is about whether government should control people's lives. I'm against nannyism myself.

Is there a “marker” in the sugar sodas that are actually linked to the causes of death?

If not, then it is nothing but statistics pulled out of thin air.

So what is a “good” cause of death?

Dementia after 3 years in wheel chair in a nursing home wearing diapers?

However global warming will likely save that many people from being killed in snowshoe, snowmobile and skiing accidents, falling on icy sidewalks and in car accidents caused by winter weather conditions.

The TAXPAYERS...(I doubt it came out of the people who did the studies pockets)

In Reality there was no study - at least in a manner reflecting how I was trained to do such studies.

First question - where was the control group? They claim a relatively small number of deaths nation wide but where is the study on a like group who never had a highly sugared drink in their lives?

Second question - what is the threshold for calling a drink “highly sugared”? What parts per million?

Third question - what was the duration of the study?

There a many other questions that should be asked to establish the validity of this “study”!

IMHO, this study like so many other “studies” consisted of someone reading a bunch of other studies and making unsupported conclusions based on the frequency of a minor data packet, if that. i also find it interesting that this “study” was released after the court system struck down Bloomberg’s ban on larger sodas.

Important safety note: Before consuming sugary drinks, it is important to remember to consume only the drink, not its container. Some 25,000 Americans a year are dieing because they attempted to swallow a sugary drink can, bottle, or box, and subsequently choked.
