25,000 U.S. Deaths Linked to Sugary Drinks ABC NewsBy Katie Moisse | ABC News 8 hours ago
In a study that's sure to shake up the soda ban debate, Harvard researchers have linked the sugary drinks to 180,000 deaths a year worldwide, 25,000 in the United States alone.
"We know that sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to obesity, and that a large number of deaths are caused by obesity-related diseases. But until now, nobody had really put these pieces together," said Gitanjali Singh, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and lead author of the study presented today at the American Heart Association's annual meeting in New Orleans.
Singh and colleagues spent five years putting the pieces together. Using data from national health surveys around the world, the team tied sugar-sweetened beverages to 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 44,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases and 6,000 deaths from cancer in 2010.
The study adds to mounting evidence that sugar-sweetened beverages, loaded with calories that carry little nutritional value, are a public health hazard.
"I think our findings should really impel policymakers to make effective policies to reduce sugary beverage consumption since it causes a significant number of deaths," said Singh, adding that she thinks "cause" is an appropriate word despite the limitations of the association study.
The American Beverage Association criticized the study, which has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, calling it "more about sensationalism than science."

Bloomberg was RIGHT!
OK then, case closed. More people croak from soda pop than from guns.
A sugary drink never killed anyone, period.
This study is crap.
And now that government controls your healthcare...
If something comes out of one of the Harvard Hard Science or Engineering schools - better believe it.
As for their Law, Business, and Health schools - better put on your bull Obama hat.
These people are complete buffoons
“OK then, case closed. More people croak from soda pop than from guns.”
Well, are they assault sodas?
Life! 100% fatal.
Stats are anything you want them to be.
Reality: All people die!!
Given enough grant money, researchers can link anything to anything else.
It is all in the technique — and the amount of money they get.
These researchers must have had deep conversations with Mika Brzezinski...you know, 30-45 seconds.
I thought it was the sugar from gun shaped Pop Tarts that are the biggest killers.
I really doubt these idiots “tied” anything to drinking soda.
If they ever release their data and methods I doubt they even have a correlation let alone a causation.
If this is the rationale for banning food or drink, what's next?
Pies, cakes, Twinkies, chips, pretzels, crackers, cookies, candy, alcoholic beverages, sweet tea, sweet coffee, yada, yada, yada. None of those have nutritional value.
Why just sugary soda or is this just the camel's nose under the tent?
So, 1 out of 12,000 of us die from sugary drinks every year. Even if true and accurate, that’s almost a non-existent rate.
They are coming after your cold ones next. Beer bellys and all those carbs.
Its for the children.
“Human saliva causes cancer, but only when swallowed in small amounts over long periods of time.”
Bloomberg think so. The question remains, do people have the right to abuse their bodies?
guess all the slots at the global warming scam are all filled up....and who funded their study?
and the media go along with the hoax
just a few examples of recent stories shows that government/socialism doesn't work.
1. government funding global warming hoax for decades
2. gov schools suspending kids for chewing poptarts into shape of gun
3. gov raiding people's home because of a pic on the internet of a boy holding a gun
4. 1.5 million $ gov grant to study why lesbians are fatter than gay men
CAUTION: STUDY FINDS THAT LIVING WILL RESULT IN DEATH.
wheres my grant check?
Attention Harvard: More people die as a result of homosexual sex than drinking soda pop. Which should we ban first?
Research grants are becoming hard to come by in these days of the sequester. Expect to see more and more dire predictions of impending doom coming out of academia by researchers hoping to shake the last few dollars from the governmental money tree.
I recall a study from several decades ago that cyclamates or maybe it was the saccharine one that using that artificial sweetener would cause cancer.
It was only later that it was revealed that one would have to consume about 800 cans (12-oz) of soda PER DAY for the danger to occur.
But, you can bet, several researchers and their institute(s) got a handful of money to provide the original studies.
I will agree that soda-pop is bad. But it’s consumption is none of the Federale’s business.
I wonder if this is part of a set up for lawsuits against “Big Beverage.” They have money, and you can bet the Feds want it...
Cant they declare these sugar sodas a Greenhouse gas and regulate them?
I'm not sure if you say this tongue in cheek, but I wouldn't be surprised if within the next 10 years there isn't a real push to ban (or at least heavily tax, a la tobacco) non-diet soft drinks.
Once the government pays for people's health care, then it thinks it has the right to regulate behavior. One of the biggest factors in the restrictions on cigarettes were the medicare/medicaid costs for smokers at end of life. We will see this story again. I have no doubt.
“Singh and colleagues spent five years putting the pieces together.”
Really? It would take me five minutes. Eating and drinking crap is bad for you. Duh. But so what.
“The study adds to mounting evidence that sugar-sweetened beverages, loaded with calories that carry little nutritional value, are a public health hazard.” Ah...a PUBLIC health hazard. I see where this is going.
“I think our findings should really impel policymakers to make effective policies to reduce sugary beverage consumption since it causes a significant number of deaths,” This is a very political sounding ‘doctor’.
then what about 195,000 medical malpractice deaths a year?...Cut from and article. Googoo it.
I stopped right there.
In 2009, the EPA declared ‘carbon dioxide’ a dangerous pollutant that can and will be regulated.
Not only can sodas be regulated, humans, who exhale carbon dioxide, can be ‘regulated’ too. Death centers will be established under some program of ‘pollutant reduction’.
The EPA instead of the Defense Dept. will murder American citizens. Don’t laugh, it’s coming!
OK then, case closed. More people croak from soda pop than from guns.
Well, are they assault sodas?
That is hilarious, assault soda, these liberals are just dumb, their brains have been eaten away by their inanity
I have it from a good source that ANYONE that drank Whole Vitamin D milk during the War of 1812 died.
Also, this past St Patricks day (AS on every Amateur Night) the reports are rampant that 40%(pick a #) of traffic deaths are alcohol involved.
By all means, YES do something about that.
Wouldn’t your time be better spent (safely) to eradicate the cause of the other 60% also?
if you keep drinking sodas you will get fat and then cost the system (Obama-care) $$$ that hurts us all.
We cant allow that as a civilized society
You must be stopped for the kids and Gabby. Calling all drones...
It shouldn't "shake up the debate", as the debate isn't about sugar, whether it's good, bad or neutral. The debate is about whether government should control people's lives. I'm against nannyism myself.
“Bloomberg think so. The question remains, do people have the right to abuse their bodies?”
Yes OF COURSE people have the right to abuse their bodies!
Besides, who decides what is abuse?
People argue and present scientific evidence that suggests that eating meat or eating wheat based products (bread, pasta) “abuse” the body.
Should we limit a person’s intake of bacon? Two slices a week?
Eggs have cholesterol - should we ban them?
Beyond diet, should we regulate people’s sexual choices- statistically gay males have a MUCH higher chance of contracting AIDS than heterosexuals - should we criminalize male homosexuality?
I don’t think Bloomberg is gonna go there.
I’m absolutely certain that this study was in no way at all driven by an agenda... </is the sarc tag even necessary?>
“Well, are they assault sodas?”
Depends... does the soda come in a scary-looking plastic bottle?
And while we’re at it, we should ban high-capacity soda containers. 16oz is all anyone would ever need; just ask Mayor Bloominidiot.
Worldwide it comes to about .002%. Pink Eye probably has a higher death rate.
“Depends... does the soda come in a scary-looking plastic bottle?
And while were at it, we should ban high-capacity soda containers. 16oz is all anyone would ever need; just ask Mayor Bloominidiot.”
Sodas in black bottles are more lethal, of course. Especially if they have collapsible necks and hand grips.
Millions of people die every year across the planet die from sex. Yes, that’s right. You heard me. You see, sex leads to babies. Everybody dies. Eventually. So, sex leads to death. QED
Is there a “marker” in the sugar sodas that are actually linked to the causes of death?
If not, then it is nothing but statistics pulled out of thin air.
YESSS! Well done.
So what is a “good” cause of death?
Dementia after 3 years in wheel chair in a nursing home wearing diapers?
If one live long enough you die like your born bald toothless wearing diapers and waiting for someone to feed you.
