STEUBENVILLE - Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin and her family had to leave town during the juvenile rape trial because of threats made against both her and her family.
Sunday evening, Hanlin confirmed that threats had been made, and she found them to be credible. Hanlin said there were instances of threats before, but the number of threats of a specific nature grew.
"As the trial date grew closer, we received a number of them that seemed to be more credible than others," Hanlin said.
Thanks for the clarification.
I have seen 'power drinkers' get stuporous pretty quick, and if they were doing shots of something more potent than beer or really chugging them down (or she was being encouraged to do so), it is entirely possible. Of course, that is flirting with alcohol poisoning, but the point is that put enough alcohol in anyone (or even toss in a roofie) and whoever will be lucky to remember where they are when they come to. Inexperienced drinkers who have not built a tolerance are even more likely to overdo it, while the long term heavy drinker can go into blackout mode and maintain the appearance of being functional (more or less) and have no memory of events afterwards.
I have seen both.
The use of drugs is not speculation pulled out of then air.
They even know who sold the drugs, they know this same crime has been pulled before and they know of other victims.
Because they did not have “proof” they chose to characterize the girl as “drunk”. She was drugged and had she not vomitted several times it might have been fatal.
What was revealed at the trial is a small fraction of what actually happened.
A truly despicable cast of characters.
I'm not so sure they recognize the monster they have created, but would wager they would fantasize about being the football players rather than the victim.
The problem for them is that while "If it feels good, do it" may be a mantra of theirs, they can't control the beast that is a society unrestrained by social codes or morals. That creature will turn on them, and then they'll wail.
The girl had stated that she wanted to “do” the entire team. So yes, she was by no means a paragon of moral virtue. It also raises the question that if she’d wanted to do the team why does it matter if she were conscious or not?
Please note, I still think these boys have the morals of dogs. They should go to jail but I don’t see her as much better.
Real men are taught not to take advantage of those who are weaker than them.
A thinking, compassionate, self-controlled individual would not rape a drunk or incapacitated girl,... period.
Judging from how many threads about this rape you’ve commented on, blaming the victim with such anger and hate, I’m guessing you were somehow involved in this rape or have been accused and/or convicted of rape.
What I’ve read is that she doesn’t remember anything after being picked up in a car by 2 of her rapists (one of whom was good friends with her ex-boyfriend who had just a couple weeks earlier tweeted that he was going to destroy her) and the boyfriend of the girl who talked her into going to the party (the guy who videotaped her being raped and sodomized in the back seat of the car later that night).
I’m not an expert on such things since I’ve never been drunk, but can a person really get drunk within a minute’s time? I also don’t know how date-rape drugs work; would she experience sudden loss of consciousness like that?
She participated in a case where she and her actions were part of what was on trial.
Sounds sort of like Kagan and Sotomayor. I guess if they can get away with not recusing themselves as judges in the highest court in the land, then why should a mere prosecutor show integrity?
No. Had they been "lynched", they would be dead. That's what the word means.
That would have been justice. Anything less is a slap on the wrist.
Rape is an act of violence where sex is the weapon. They meant to degrade and demean her and in this way be superior. It’s a common enough human trait and why God had to reestablish the Ten Commandments - people without God get increasingly depraved.
She doesn’t sound like a paragon of virtue, like you say.
But wanting to “do” the entire team is not the same thing as wanting to be on display before the whole world being raped, sodomized, subjected to oral sex, and being pissed on - while being mocked over her inability to doing anything to stop it.
And to have these things done to her in the homes of the COACHES and the PROSECUTOR, for heaven’s sake! Sounds like the head coach was making threats to media members who asked about the fact that none of the players were even disciplined after all the booze-and-drugs partying, rapes, and boasting about the rapes were publicly known - because the players didn’t think they had done anything wrong! Wow, if they had murdered somebody but claimed they didn’t think it was wrong, we’d say, “OK, I guess you didn’t do anything wrong....”?
Sounds like the players had the coaches and everybody associated with that team eating from their hands. It’s no wonder they acted like they were God - their whole world was treating them as if they were!
Maybe because the community knows more about it than we do.
Has the Zimmerman case taught us nothing?
“Steubenville rape prosecutor confirms threats to her, her family”
She’s TAKING ON THE FOOTBALL TEAM, of course people will get angry. Who does she think she is?
You can have "protection" or you can have "equality."
You can't have both.
I'm beginning to appreciate Ayn Rand's antipathy for "altruists."
>> would she experience sudden loss of consciousness like that?
No, not at all. Nothing like that. It makes a person complacent, not unconscious.
Here is a list of drugs, some of which can cause loss of consciousness: http://onestudent.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/common-drugs.pdf
The loss of memory happening so fast doesn’t make sense.
I'm guessing you learned how to carry on an argument by watching sixth grade girls.
Yes, that clip where the guy can't stop laughing about her being "deader than OJ's wife" and other deceased people was beyond disgusting. While she's very probably in need of medical attention the guy's on camera unable to stop laughing about the degrading things done to her and her inability to do anything about it. He showed zero regard for her as a human being. She was nothing more than an object for use and abuse.
How do you know the speed at which a memory loss takes place?
On one of the several times I have been called for jury duty, several years ago it was a date rape case involving two students at the local college.
During jury selection, the facts of the case seemed to admitted by the defense. They both were drunk, decided to get out of the car to continue ‘making out’, she said “STOP” and he did not.
The defense lawyer had the accused all cleaned up neat & tidy in a suit & tie. It appeared that they had hired a gorgeous ‘babe’ from central casting, dressed up prim & proper like ‘Marian the Librarian’, to pose as legal secretary and sit next to the accused.
Implication? “Why, if this beautiful, pure young woman is safe sitting next to the accused, then he MUST be innocent!”
When the defense attorney questioned us, the prospective jurors, he learned that I was a former Marine captain, a Vietnam veteran with three daughters. He quietly said, “You are dismissed.”
My thoughts on that case (without hearing the full testimony)?
Yes, the girl was really stupid. But, she will have to live with the memory of the results of her stupidity for the rest of her life.
Yes, the man was probably enticed and aroused by the girl.
But, NO means NO. Period!
My solution to the problem of date rape?
Have video booth vending machines on campus, at the mall and in the nightlife district. Both parties sit in the booth and have a brief “Mutual Consent” deposition videotaped. A copy is retained in the machine. Another is stored on a small memory chip attached to the “Consensual Sex Affidavit” form that is printed out. After it is witnessed by two people, it becomes a legal document, absolving the man of any exposure to rape charges. If he does not have one, he’s guilty.
Will anyone use these? Probably not. But they may make BOTH the guys & the girls behave a bit more prudently (yes, “prudently”, as in ‘Prude”) ....or a least THINK about behaving...
[just my 2 cents worth]
Is it known whether she had anything in her system before they picked her up? There may have been circumstances that weren't admissable that aren't publicly known. She may already have been under the influence (of her own accord or otherwise). Or she could have been on medication that would have caused something else to act more potently than it might have done otherwise.
Prosecutor Jane Hanlin’s son is suspected of being a participant in the revenge rape.
Date rape through the use of roofies happens all the time. The drug leaves the system almost immediately, is hard to trace, and leaves one in a zombie state - awake but not aware of anything. It is an epidemic on college campuses.
The link I gave listed effects of various drugs, including the amount of time it takes for the effects to take hold. The link was in the same post as you responded to.
It’s called research, douche bag. Why don’t you try it instead of asking stupid questions?
Jane Hanlin is the original prosecutor in the case. Her son is Charlie Keenan, a football player suspected of being a participant.
When do the arrests and civil suits start against those that provided the party house and booze?
Good points. My understanding is that any testing for drugs may have been too late to be accurate. Others here have said that the drug used is known, where it was acquired from, etc. If that is true, it will hopefully come out.
What happened was terrible. The least we can do is try to understand what could have been done to prevent it.
It is obvious that changing the attitudes of people who poo-pooh this kind of stuff is critical. And that includes the whole “safe sex” mentality, that people are animals and can’t help but behave like animals.
In this case?
The rapists should be hanged from the goalposts of their football field during a school assembly. Haul them up slowly and let them go to hell choking and kicking as an object lesson.
Including the prosecutor, whose son is one of the suspects?
The wonder about all of this is that the case went forward at all. Who made sure that this Hanlin gal didn’t just bury these accusations?
I say this because I filed a criminal report about DNC Counsel Bob Bauer committing election fraud and subornation of perjury and the state AG sent it to that great law enforcement body, the SOS’s office.... Law enforcement has the ability to bury cases they don’t want to prosecute. What kept that from happening in this instance? Anybody know?
It has been my experience that assuming a question is "stupid" usually means one does not understand the question.
Case in point: how does one know at what point this girl lost all memory to determine whether it was drug induced or a common blackout?
I don’t know what drug they are saying was used in this case. I had asked if there was a date-rape drug that would cause sudden unconsciousness and was given a link to a wikipedia entry for a particular drug. Expat, do you know if that was the drug that’s been claimed was used in this case?
“We as a society allowed it. And now, just blindly accept” it.
Yep. We make believe we didn’t once know right from wrong.
OK, I did misunderstand what you were asking. I thought you were asking how I knew how fast drugs act. I presume that the reports that she can’t remember anything from after she was picked up was based on her testimony.
Does anybody know if the testimony and evidence are available to the public somewhere?
go ahead and define "common blackout."
Changing attitudes is an uphill battle, isn't it? It really saddens me to think that this whole episode would probably never have happened if that girl had had one person there who actually thought of her best interests instead of their own gratification.
When you have a female rape or murder victim - there will always be a certain group that will demonize the victim.
It doesn’t matter if she is a virginal delicate flower - or the town hoochie....anything to deflect attention away from the depraved actions of rapists.
No - she should not have drank herself into oblivion - nor should she ever have considered any of these lovely teens to be friends she could trust.
Regardless - what a bunch of teens will do when confronted with an unconscious girl? It’s become Lord of the Flies.
She is lucky to be alive.
Sooooo much misinformation......
City police began their investigation after the victim’s parents went to the Steubenville police station on Aug. 14 to report a sexual assault involving their daughter.
As Hanlin coordinated the initial investigation effort with local law enforcement, state investigators were brought in early, records show. BCI was pressed into service on Aug. 16 to help process the crime scene where the rape took place.
On Aug. 27, Hanlin officially requested assistance from the Ohio Attorney General’s office in the prosecution of the two juveniles.
Hanlin had no further involvement with the case, she said.
Walter Madison, Richmond’s attorney, mentioned Hanlin and her son during testimony and during his closing arguments Saturday night.
Charlie Keenan’s (Hanlin’s son) name was mentioned in one report, but the lead investigator testified to excluding him as a suspect or witness saying he accounted for Keenan’s whereabouts during the days in question.
Hanlin said she heard her and her son mentioned indirectly by Madison during the trial.
“I think it was irresponsible for (Madison) bringing it up, especially in closing arguments, when it was clearly explained in testimony that Charlie had absolutely nothing to do with the incident,” Hanlin said.
did you see the pics of her being carried around while she was unconscious?
Did you see the Michael Nodianos video describing her as being unconscious?
“It is an epidemic on college campuses.”
A very odd thing when you consider that, these days (to say nothing of my own day)you have to be some kind of real loser not to be able to “pick up” a willing female.
I don’t know if that is the specific drug some sources have talked about. It’s the drug common referred to as the “date rape” drug.
Alcohol, pot, coke, morphine, heroin, plus all of the dozens and dozens of sleep inducing, anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, muscle relaxant drugs, plus all the stimulants and any drug other you can think of, I suppose could, and probably have been, used during a sexual assault, but when someone asks about the “date rape drug”, I assume they are talking about roofies - the link I posted.
One induced by excessive alcohol consumption.
And you think I'm stupid?
Please be so kind as to provide a link to the testimony implicating rophynol usage. That's a new one on me.
Sheesh. Rape isn’t about sex. It’s about control. And no, the environment isn’t one where there are willing females everywhere. I also don’t recall hearing about many females “willing” to be controlled and forced, against their will.
I assume most of the residents of that disgusting town are registered Democrats.....
What I have a "big problem" with is the legal theory claiming "consent" is a notarized form, signed in triplicate, just prior to coitus.
Consent requires being aware and having full faculty. The girl, CLEARLY, WAS NOT IN THAT STATE.
So by your evasion I take it there is no such link?
