A controversial article published in Philadelphia Magazine this month has the attention of the Nutter Administration.
The article, titled Being White in Philly, features a series of interviews with anonymous white residents from different areas of the city who share stories about their interaction with black residents.
Mayor Nutter calls the articles tone disgusting, and hes asked the Human Relations Commission to investigate some of the sensitive racial issues explored in the piece.
Nutter spokesman Mark McDonald says this is all about fact finding.
I think he feels that there are enough problems in this article that it warrants a closer look, McDonald explains.
PHRC executive director Rue Landau says the commission shares Mayor Nutters concerns, and they were already looking at intergroup relations in the city, particularly in changing communities.
The PHRC will hold a public meeting in the Fairmount/Brewerytown section of the city on April 18th, and residents are encouraged to attend to share their stories, concerns, and recommendations for changes. The location has yet to be determined.
In a statement, Philadelphia Magazine editor Tom McGrath says the mayor, like any reader, is entitled to think and say anything he wants about the article and that the need to have a deeper discussion about race in Philadelphia is exactly why they ran the story in the first place.
The full statement from Philadelphia Magazines editor Tom McGrath about Mayor Nutters letter to the PHRC reads:
I applaud the mayor for asking for an inquiry into the state of racial issues in Philadelphia. The need to have a deeper discussion about race in Philadelphia is exactly why we ran our story in the first place.
Like any reader, the mayor is entitled to think and say what he wants about the story. That said, his sophomoric statements about the magazine and mischaracterization of the piece make me wonder if hes more interested in scoring political points than having a serious conversation about the issues. Furthermore, his call for a rebuke of the magazine by the PHRC is rich with irony. This is the same mayor who just yesterday was shouted down by an unruly mob in City Council; now he himself wants shut down conversation about an important issue in our city. In short, the mayor loves the First Amendmentas long as he and the government can control what gets said.
blacks have been encouraged to and now do hate whites
Read the article folks. As usual people who are racist againt whites want to surpress information about black racism and bias, and surpress the discussion of what is going on in black communities.
The article is “digusting”? Why?
Big cities are black and blue.
Will he give a speech on “White History Month” celebrations?
The truth is painful...everyone knows that. All folks in denial hate the truth...and our country is in denial.
There will be two Black Panthers out front with clubs keeping everyone honest.
Come and get us racist!
Best that you shut up white boy.
It’s NOT only Philly, but EVERY major city in America, and has been fanned, cheered, extorted, high-fived, and “right-on’d”, ever since this Webster’s definition of a bastard was foisted upon the rest of us!
I don’t know about you folks, but I’ve had enough! I lived in New England, during the ‘60’s race riots. where there were folks that kept trying to tell me, that it was MY fault, for what was going on, in the South!
I kep asking them: “Where is the State of Michigan?”
Answer: Uppah U.S.!”
(well, it IS, isn’t it?)
Good for Tom McGrath for fighting the long and just fight.
No, he called it “disgusting”, not “disturbing”
Calling it disgusting gives away what’s really on his
mind and what his motives are for going further with “the controversy”
he thinks the magazine has initiated.
Bailey O'Neill turned 12 on Saturday, a day before his death
Monday, Mar 4, 2013
A young boy who was the victim of bullying died at the hospital Sunday morning, according to his family. Bailey O'Neill, who turned 12 on Saturday, was in a coma after suffering several seizures.
Bailey's family says he was jumped by two classmates during recess at Darby Township School back in January and suffered a concussion as well as a broken nose as a result. He then began to suffer seizures the next day, forcing doctors to put him into a medically-induced coma.
White Hispanics might want to stay away from there also.
Hey Nutless Nutter, the conversation occurred a long time ago.
I can see the results of this without a crystal ball.
Any white person who speaks out will be called racist.
We already know Nutter is an Obama voter and his bias in favor of blacks.
The truth is When Blacks come into a neighborhood in numbers whites have to move. It has been this way for 50 years, since the blockbusting days. How many communities have Americans seen turn to shyt because of this blatant fact. It will always be so.
Blacks move into a white neighborhood for the same reason , they look for a better future for their kids..A neighborhood where they can be safe. The trouble is that they drag the problem into the neighborhood with them. As soon as the neighborhood reach’s a certain percentage of blacks it is finished.
The truth hurts, but it is the truth, we have all seen it, and the really fun part is that the liberals are the first to run.
