SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — A man accused of killing a Syracuse woman and raping her 10-year-old daughter during a carjacking was beaten and suffered a broken nose on his first day in jail, authorities said.

David Renz had a swollen face and tissues stuffed up both nostrils when he appeared in federal court Friday to face a probation violation charge.

As a friend of mine with corrections management experience first explained to me, ordinary criminals — burglars, drug dealers, robbers, and the like — hate those who mistreat children, both on moral principle and because so many criminals suffered abuse themselves as children.

I have relatives who worked for the OCSD in and guarded “The Pub”, which is what the Public Safety Building (Onondaga county jail) used to be called. They told me that criminals, despite their lawlessness, had 3 rules: Don’t mess with kids, don’t mess with women and don’t mess with the clergy.

Most of them had wives/girlfriends/kids on the outside whom they could not protect, since they themselves were incarcerated, so they frowned on predators of women/children. They also respected clergy, since many got religion once incarcerated or relied on clergy back home to assist their families.

People being put into the jail who had violated this “code of honor” were treated with extreme hostility by the other criminals. Sounds like the code is still in force.....
