BACKGROUND:
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ (born December 17, 1936) is the current pope of the Roman Catholic Church, elected on March 13, 2013, and taking the regnal name of Francis I. Prior to his election, he served as an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. He was elevated to Pope in March 2013.
Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian railway worker and his wife. After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 13, 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.
Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where had had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.
Of course he’s an American — a South American, born in Argentina.

The Jesuits and Franciscans have a sort of rivalry - lot of jokes made about them some time ago.
I always thought the Jesuits were pretty tough and the Franciscans were a little loose.
I really could be way off.
To think that the First Pope was appointed by Jesus Christ himself is amazing. What an incredible lineage!

Although I’m not a Catholic, I will keep Pope Francis in my prayers. He will need as much as possible.

I’m concerned with his views on so called, “social justice” and the problems he has with the free market system.
About time we had a South American Pope. Lots of good Catholics in that part of the world. Good to see one of there own as Shepard of the flock. God bless him!

Jesuits tend to be more into Leftist, social and economic justice causes.
I don’t know exactly what this man stands for, but the Jesuit educational insitutions in this country are really Lefty (Notre Dame, Marquette, Georgetown etc)

There is a British film from 1986 about the Jesuits at their best: “The Mission”.
The film is set in the 1750s and involves Spanish Jesuit priest Father Gabriel (played by Jeremy Irons) who enters the South American jungle to build a mission and convert a Guaraní community to Christianity. This film comes highly recommended... http://artsandfaith.com/t100/

He is Roman, because he is Italian, and also because the Holy See is now in Rome.
The Peter part I have yet to understand, but, Malachy's other mottoes were not only similarly opaque, some were a pretty good reach.
Maybe the Rock refers to the Office itself.
Maybe it refers to his obstinacy, which we have yet to see...
He could still be Peter the Roman.
I like him already, we share the same birthday (not year of course LOL).

And, no one is suggesting a 30 year old be elected as Pope. I’m disheartened to know you think any age over 30 is on the down slide of life. Especially since I’m a couple decades past 30. ;-(
