Paul fires back: Sens. McCain, Graham think 'whole world is a battlefield'
The Hill ^ | March 7, 2013 | Daniel Strauss

Posted on 03/07/2013 12:51:49 PM PST by jazusamo

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) blasted fellow GOP Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Thursday, saying the two “think the whole world is a battlefield.”

Paul criticized the hawkish senators for thinking the laws of war should take precedence over the Bill of Rights. The two had criticized Paul’s statements about drone policy during the Kentucky Republican’s 13-hour filibuster on Thursday.

“They think the whole world is a battlefield including America and that the laws of war should apply,” Paul said in an interview on Fox News about McCain and Graham, who had described Paul’s comments about drones as “ridiculous.”

“The laws of war don't involve due process so when they ask you for an attorney you tell them to shut up. That's not my understanding of the way America works,” Paul told Fox. “I don't think the laws of war apply to America, I think the Bill of Rights do and I think it's a disservice to our soldiers that our senators up there arguing that the Bill of Rights aren't important.

Paul said whether drones can be used against U.S. citizens on U.S. soil is a “very serious question” and was at the root of Wednesday’s filibuster, which delayed a final confirmation vote on John Brennan, President Obama’s nominee to lead the CIA.

“This was a very serious question. It was a question that took a month and a half to get an answer to and I so I would argue and I think a lot of the public would agree with me, both on the right and the left, that what we ask was a very serious question and it's a question that we finally got an answer to,” Paul said.

Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday responded to Paul in a letter that said the U.S. does not have the authority to conduct a drone attack against a U.S. citizen on American soil.

“Hooray, for 13 hours yesterday we asked them that question. And so there is a result and a victory,” Paul said after the letter was read to him during the Fox interview. “Under duress and under public humiliation the White House will respond and do the right thing.”

The answer just took a filibuster that lasted almost half a day, Paul added.

“So now, after 13 hours of filibuster, we're proud to announce that the president is not going to kill unarmed Americans on American soil,” Paul continued. “My next question is why did it take so long, why is it so hard and why would a president so jealously guard power that they were afraid to say this but I am glad and I think that the answer does answer my question.”

McCain is still in office because he has the Good Ole Boy GOP in this state wrapped around his finger. We have open primaries, so Independents and Democrats ensure that he is the candidate every time. In the last election, McCain still had to spend over $20M in the PRIMARY to just defeat JD Hayworth. The mushy middle love that open primary and will keep it as long as McCain says they will keep it because the Tea Party is locked out of the GOP in Arizona.

He's corrupt to the core. Keating Five anyone?

I kind of get why McCain keeps winning in Ariz..because old war horses get a certain habitual vote...but Graham in South Carolina? I just don’t get that one at all.

McCain is upset because his AMNESTY spotlight was “stolen”.

McCain should resign.

I think if we need to send troops somewhere, once we have accomplished what we need to do we need to bring them home. We need to stop spending years to win hearts and minds and attempt to mold these countries into something their population does not understand enough to even desire.

the enemy of liberty for US citizens was never in Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Waco or Ruby Ridge.

the enemy of the US constitution is the "corporate evil" that the US political and Federal Reserve system has devolved into.

the enemy is not "over there", the enemy is the "hearts and minds" of our politicians

according to the Laws of natural order, the USA is overdue for destruction

I fear that violence is coming for our government and they feel it in their bones, because they know in their hearts that they deserve it, which is why they want to ban assault rifles and collect millions of rounds of hollowpoint ammo for the DHS

Rand Paul said that McCain and Graham “were on the wrong side of history”. He is totally correct.

McCain is still carping about the slaughter of the Syrian population and yet he can’t seem to make a rational connection to something like that happening here in the USA, or any other country, dominated by an out of control government. Really?????

McCain and Graham have been in the Senate too long. They are part of the problem that is systemic amongst the old and out of touch establishment. Anyone that allows any branch of the government to become so powerful that there are no checks and balances is a fool.

McCain where is the oversight? Where is the due process of law? How much more of our Constitution Rights are you willing to destroy? You don’t like the slaughter of Syrian civilians and yet you are willing to let American Citizens to be attacked on US soil because Obama considers them a threat to the USA government? Really???

REALLY??????

My understanding is that the letter Holder sent to Paul said that the authority to kill US citizens on US soil would have to be evaluated and advised on a case-by-case basis . . . with Holder doing the evaluating and advising.

Is this correct?

is there a way for tea party activists to focus on closing down open primaries.

it seems the DC country club needs open primaries more than the nation.

Very well said...These two are a big part of the problem, many times they remind me of behavior by schizophrenics. They can be fine on some issues and then completely blow it on basic things that anyone with a little common sense has no difficulty with. The saddest thing is they're contributing to the downfall of the country and that's unacceptable.

Rubio voted to confirm Brennan, a jihadi Muslim converted to Islam in Saudi Arabia while serving there.

Like many others I have no use for Rubio and will NEVER vote for or financially support Rubio. He is just as bad as McCain and Graham.

Laura Esterline Dear Senator,

Your response to Rand Paul’s filibuster has me greatly disappointed in you and angry, too. How dare you, sir? Our liberties have been eroded greatly and are being eroded more in the name of homeland security. This is America, and we are Americans, and we deserve senators like Rand Paul actually representing OUR interests in Congress, instead of eating fancy meals at the expense of taxpayers while we real Americans are eating rice and beans and paying extra taxes. This president is overstepping his authority, and you are enabling it. Please do your job, and while you are at it, I ask you to beg Rand Paul’s pardon, and support him in asking reasonable questions of the president and defending the Constitution as he swore to do. He wasn’t rude, raving, or insane, no matter how much you and Lindsey Graham try to make him look so. He was honest and spoke the truth, which we hear far too little of from Washington.

I could not get your Senate page to allow me to send you a message. I hope you get this one.

Brandi Nabors Mr. Graham, I am not going to ‘like’ your page no matter what the GOP establishment insists that we do. I am instead here to tell you that you and Senator McCain should be ashamed of yourselves for your lack of respect toward the 13 senators that participated in the filibuster on Wednesday. I cannot believe that any of you would put down Senator Rand Paul for his attempt to protect the constitution of this great nation and HOW DARE YOU not stand with him to demand that this administration will not issue drone strikes against our citizens on our soil. You took an oath of office to protect, defend and serve the people of this nation and you sat silent while others stood and fought to protect us from this quickly growing tyrannical government. You are a disgrace to the office that you hold and I sincerely hope that you lose your current seat in the next election. You may be a ‘republican’ sir, but you are no defender of this nation and you deserve zero respect from me. I am grateful that my Senators from Texas stood to fight for our rights. You should be ashamed of yourself. The silence from you and all of your friends in the senate was deafening. Good riddance to you.
