Thank God this lifelong right coaster's Cali vacation was in the summer of '81 (San Diego, Santa Monica, Morro Bay, Carmel, SF), not long before things began to get really rotten there. Don't know about other parts of the Golden State, but I like to think the 1984 Olympics was L.A.'s last hurrah.

84 Olympics might have been near the end, but it was already sliding down. Went to one day's events with my dad, still remember the neighbohoods you drove through to find parking. A very Amish community, with all the usual welcoming stares from the gainfully employed lounging around.

Not a place you would want to walk around on foot, though not so many years before, you might have gotten away with it.

You guys are ob obviously tourists.

Just look at the crime stats for example.. Crime in the 1980s was *substantially* higher than it is now. In fact, LA's per capita crime rates have been dropping dramatically for many years and are generally much lower than other major cities in other states.

Ya don't have to believe me, just look it up.
